Pulitzer Prize finalist to speak at library fundraiser
H.W. Brands, historian and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, will be the guest speaker at a March 9 benefit for the Colleyville Public Library. Presented by the Friends of the Colleyville Library in association with Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, "An Evening with H.W. Brands" will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Colleyville Heritage High School. Admission is $5 for adults, with students admitted free.

Attendees are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. and stay after the program to purchase Brands' books. Following the program, he will sign books purchased that night. Teachers, principals and members of Friends for the Colleyville Public Library are invited to a private reception for Brands that evening from 6:15-6:45 p.m. in the CHHS library.

Brands has authored seventeen books and many have received critical and popular acclaim. The First American was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the Los Angeles Times Prize, as well as a New York Times bestseller. What America Owes the World was a finalist for the Lionel Gelber Prize. The Wages of Globalism was a Choice Outstanding Academic Book winner. His other books include TR: The Last Romantic, The Age of Gold, The Strange Death of American Liberalism, The Reckless Decade, and The Devil We Knew.

His new book, Lone Star Nation: How a Ragged Army of Volunteers Won the Battle for Texas Independence – and Changed America, is the "gripping story of Texas’ precarious journey to statehood."

In addition to earning masters' degrees in liberal studies and mathematics, Brand has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Texas. He worked as an oral historian at the University of Texas Law School and served as visiting assistant professor of history at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. In 1987 he joined the history faculty at Texas A&M University in College Station, where he currently serves as Distinguished Professor and holder of the Melbern G. Glasscock Chair in American History.

Jeff Guinn, Star-Telegram books editor, will be the Master of Ceremonies. Proceeds from the event will go toward enhancing the Colleyville Public Library collection of materials for student studies related to the GCISD curriculum.
