Colleyville City Council and GCISD
School Races!
With the latest veto still
ringing in his ear, Tom Hart filed for Place 5 on Wednesday last week
followed close behind by former Colleyville Area Chamber Chairman
Shirley Schollmeyer.
Schollmeyer is pitted against former Park Board Chairman and Place 3
incumbent Rich Hendler. Schollmeyer, who was named Citizen of the Year
by the chamber last year, follows a familiar pattern of candidates with
a close chamber affiliation.
Jon Ayers, was elected to fill the un-expired term of Richard Newton in
Place 4. Ayers has come under criticism from Mayor Joe Hocutt
supporters for his refusal to join Mark Skinner and Ginny Tigue in lock
step support of Hocutt's veto of P&Z members. His opponent
Dana Feldman was elected in the Donna Arp ally sweep of 2000 when Dennis
Marlin, Feldman and Ginny Tigue were elected. She lost her council
seat in 2002 when Rich Hendler received the largest vote of any
candidate.
Potentially the most interesting race may be former Planning and Zoning
Chairman Tom Hart against hold-over P&Z member Mark Jones. Although
during one vote of city council Tom Hart received a 5-0 approval, he was
vetoed by Mayor Hocutt. On subsequent votes, neither Council
members Skinner and Tigue would break ranks and oppose Hocutt.
Therefore, the P&Z continued to have three "hold-over"
members. Two of the three, Bud Sellers and Bob Culley were removed
by city council, on a 4 to 1 vote (Tigue voting not to remove) because
of the attendance requirements of the City Charter. In
two work shops called in an attempt to resolve the stalemate, Jones was
a "bargaining chip" of lame duck Mayor Pro Tem Ginny Tigue.
Tigue would not agree to any compromise that did not keep Jones in his
hold-over position on the commission and often stated she was
"satisfied" with the P&Z just as it was, therefore did not
care if there were anyone else appointed. Shortly after the filing
period opened, Jones filed to take Tigue's seat. Tigue decided not
to seek re-election.

GCISD TRUSTEE CANDIDATES
Nancy Coplen has filed for
re-election to Board Trustee Place 3 and is opposed by Robert Crane who
lists his occupation as a Director at Verizon. Place 4 pits Fiona
Sigalla against newcomer Lisa Hall. The Hall and Sigalla race is
expected to be the defining race because of the split on the Board
between Sigalla, Rodriquez and the rest of the board. Sigalla
lists her occupation as an economist and Hall as a homemaker, mother and
volunteer.
