December 31, 2004 The Fort Worth Children's Opera Theater will perform Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing in Colleyville's Center January 13th at 7 pm Fort Worth Opera’s Children’s Opera Theatre introduces thousands of children to the wonder of opera each year through its touring program. The Colleyville MasterWorks series is proud to welcome them to Northeast Tarrant County. Performed in English, Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing, a new production for FWCOT, is a one-act interactive opera with full costumes and moveable sets. Susan and JimVilé wrote the libretto or story of Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing. The Vilés came to be librettists thorough their experience in the theater. After working in England and Nigeria, they moved to Australia in 1975. Jim was on the faculty of the University of Adelaide along with composer Malcolm Fox. In addition to his faculty position, Jim was Managing Artistic Director of La Boite Theatre, in Brisbane, Australia. Sue is known for her writing of plays and libretti for musicals and operas. She has also received awards for her work as a stage director. Malcolm Fox who was born in Windsor, England in 1946 composed the music. He received his music education at the University of London, King’s College and the prestigious Royal College of Music. He was not only a composer, but also a pianist and conductor. In 1974 he moved to Australia to work at the University of Adelaide. Malcolm Fox’s children’s operas are his most well known works. Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing has been performed over 4000 times in English speaking countries all over the world. Besides children’s operas, he composed works for orchestra, solo instruments, choruses, small ensembles and electronic instruments. Malcolm Fox died in 1997 in Australia. Their story begins at a circus with a clown, a juggler and a strongman trying to coax Sid the Serpent out of a basket. Sid, who is tired of slithering all the time, really wants to be a singer. He travels all over the world to Rome, London, and New York, to try and find the right style of singing for him, but ends up realizing, with the help of his circus friends, that he could sing all along and that he just had to use his own style. Come to the MasterWorks performance on January 13th to travel around the world with Sid the Serpent and his circus friends! The cast includes: Clown/Music Hall Artist/Super Swingin’ Sally Sue – Tawny Seward, soprano, Houston, TX; Juggler/Music Hall Artist/Señora - Kendra Herrington, mezzo-soprano, Richardson, Texas; Sid the Serpent – Benjamin Bunsold, tenor, Marysville, OH; Strongman/Music Hall Artist – Brandon Poor, baritone, Farmington, NM and Accompanist/Tour Manager – Jason Smith, Jacksonville, FL. The City of Colleyville and ARTSNET present a free performance on selected months with Master of Ceremonies, Andrew Wayne. The MasterWorks Series is designed to offer a variety of quality, family entertainment to the community featuring local, regional and national artists.
