February 04, 2005 Dallas Morning News reports steroids used with by Colleyville Heritage athletes. The Dallas Morning News reported this morning that nine Colleyville Heritage High School students have admitted using banned steroids. LNO discussed the report with Morning News sources today and found that any inquiry to school board members have been referred back to Robin McClure. The Morning News reported that Coach Chris Cunningham denied any use among his football team that finished with a 4-6 record last year. The report said that an "adult" source sold them the steroids and the district has not made a determination on any discipline action against the students. The district said an investigation was ongoing. As of today, the reported accusations of steroid use had not been widely known with the local public. While steroids have been referenced to high profile professional athletes, this is the most serious report concerning high school athletics in the area, potentially in the United States. As present GCISD does not test its students for steroids, although the recent report may cause a significant change in that consideration. Possession or sale of steroids without a doctor's prescription is a federal offense, punishable by up to one year in prison and a minimum $1,000 fine. The Morning News reported that Cunningham called the source of the information "a liar" and stated apparently a mother caught a son taking steroids, and she just wants someone to blame." The report said that the only other known instance in which several high school students admitted using steroids occurred in Buckeye, Ariz., in fall 2003, a search of news databases shows. |
