Colleyville Police Officer was
attacked by suspect according to PD press release The Colleyville PD released a
press statement today concerning this weekend's police chase and capture
of a suspect.
An alert Officer Raymon Cannon
observed a vehicle acting in a suspicious manner. Upon
attempting to stop the vehicle, the suspect fled and crashed into the old Couch building.
A foot chase
ensued into the nearby Kroger. Sergeant Clyde Davis and Officer
J. Holderead assisted in the apprehension of Doug Bachstein who
attacked Officer Cannon.
Doug Bachstein is shown in this
March 2005 photo from the Texas Department of Public
Safety. He was charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault on
an 8 year old female October 12, 1992.
Around 9:30
pm on Friday evening, Officer Raymon Cannon observed a blue 1987
Chevrolet Suburban traveling north in the 5200 block of Bransford
Rd. Cannon alertly followed the vehicle for several minutes
observing the driver acting in a suspicious manner as if looking for
open garage doors and/or unlocked vehicles.
Cannon noticed an equipment violation
on the vehicle and attempted to stop the Suburban. The vehicle
then attempted to run from Cannon and backup was called to assist.
The Suburban was traveling at a high rate of speed and may have been
unaware of the sharp turn on Pleasant Run near Applebee's. He
obviously hesitated and appears to have gone air-born traveling up a
wheel chair ramp at the back of the old Couch property. Skid marks
on Pleasant Run indicate the vehicle had slammed on the brakes, however
the lack of substantial wheel ruts on the grass indicate the vehicle was
probably in the air at some point.
Doug Bachstein had not registered,
apparently as required by State Law, the address on Rustic Trail
in Colleyville where he has been living.
Sergeant Clyde Davis and Officer
Jennifer Holderead assisted Officer Cannon after he was attacked
by Bachstein.
After Bachstein wrecked out into the old
Couch building, he took off running on foot. According to the
Colleyville PD release, "The suspect attacked and assaulted the
arresting officer (Cannon)." LNO has learned that Cannon
suffered significant scrapes to his legs but no other injuries when the
suspect attacked the officer. The release stated that the 35
year old Bachstein was wanted on a parole violation warrant. He
has now been charged with Evading Detention in a Vehicle and Aggravated
Assault on a Public Servant. LNO understands that the owner of the
Suburban told police that Bachstein had permission to use their
vehicle.
LNO has learned the Suburban was registered to 5317 Rustic Trail
in Colleyville. TAD lists the owners of the property as Mark and Melinda
Stokes. It was reported that police were told that Bachstein was said to
have permission to use the car.
David and Tammy Lee of Colleyville
live on Rustic Trail. David Lee said that Bachstein was apparently staying with a family on the
quiet residential street. Lee said he was concerned that
Bachstein did not show up living at this address when checked on
the state's sexual offender web site. According to
Colleyville Chief of Police, Tommy Ingram, Bachstein was
required to register with the Colleyville Police Department
within 24 hours after moving to Colleyville. Lee said that
he is speaking to his neighbors about the incident.
According to records obtained by LNO,
Bachstein was charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault in 1992. It
appears he pled down to the lesser offense of Indecency with a
Child/Sexual Contact. He was sentenced to 6 months in jail and 10
years probation in 1993. Court records show that, while on
probation, on November 25, 1999 Bachstein was arrested for possession of
drugs, probation was revoked and he was transferred to the Texas Prison
System. Bachstein had a "mandatory release" from prison
on March 15, 2002, however his original sentence for the sexual charge
with a child in Johnson County indicates his sentence was actually until
December 19, 2006.
In addition, LNO has learned that Bachstein was again incarcerated on August 14, 2003
after being arrested for parole violation. He was released from
State Prison on February 28, 2005. As part of his release
Bachstein was supposed to have arrived at a half-way house in El Paso by
March 3, 2005. Bachstein was registered as sexual offender in
Southlake but did not register in Colleyville.
