AN LNO EXCLUSIVE Colleyville's Car Chase Suspect was
arrested twice in Southlake
Colleyville Mug Shot
from April 8th
Doug
Bachstein was apprehended in a high speed car chase through
neighborhoods of Colleyville on Friday April 8th.
Bachstein is known to Southlake Police as well. The
suspect had been arrested twice in Southlake. July 2003 he
was arrested for probation and parole violations and then again
in December 2003 for parole violation. Despite the fact
the convicted child molester had a prison sentence that would
keep him incarcerated until next year and the fact he was
arrested for multiple probation and parole violations, Bachstein
put police officers and civilians in harms way on Friday
night. His attempt to evade Colleyville Officer Raymon
Cannon resulted in Bachstein wrecking out after crashing into the historic Couch building on
Colleyville Boulevard.
The Friday night five minute car chase
was recorded on the in-car camera of Colleyville Officer Raymon
Cannon. The in-car camera recorded Bachstein's maneuvers in his
attempt to evade the police officer including a near collision at one
point with the police car.
When Bachstein crashed the Suburban he was driving, it appeared the
driver could have easily suffered major injuries. However Bachstein,
with no apparent injuries, lunged out of the Suburban and started
running on foot. Officer Cannon had to react quickly and follow in
the police cruiser. Officer Cannon was forced to make a quick
jaunt onto Colleyville Boulevard, where a truck, failing to yield, had a
close call with Cannon's cruiser.
After crashing, Bachstein ran into the bank parking lot requiring
Officer Cannon to make a tight squeeze going the wrong way through the
bank's drive thrus to keep from losing the suspect. Bachstein then
sprinted behind Ruggeri's Restaurant into the Kroger parking lot before
dashing into the grocery store.
Despite
close calls and a fleeing suspect, Officer Cannon can be heard on the
video reporting to dispatch the movements of Bachstein and calling for
backup in a calm voice. At the end of the chase, Officer Cannon
can be seen sprinting into Kroger. Bachstein
was first thought to have a knife in his hand, but he was actually
holding a Sharpie pen.
Upon entering Kroger and confronting the suspect, Bachstein ran at Officer Cannon
knocking him
down. Cannon then proceeded to struggle with the suspect before Sergeant Clyde Davis and
Officer Jennifer Holderead jumped in to assist in handcuffing Bachstein.
Officer Cannon exhibited bravery and incredible restraint when capturing
Bachstein. With a guaranteed trip back to state prison, Bachstein
was violent and unpredictable. The video clearly demonstrates that
the Colleyville officer had been put in harms way by Bachstein, yet
Officer Raymon Cannon can be heard in a voice that would
otherwise give one the impression he was on a routine traffic stop
instead of a high speed chase.
The Colleyville police officer's keen observation of the suspect's
erratic actions initially started the string of events that led to the
capture of a wanted criminal.

The reports
from Southlake cover two arrests in 2003 when Bachstein was
apprehended by Southlake Police Officers on a probation violation (July
2003) and a parole violation (December 2003), which were issued
by the Austin State Parole Board. There were no additional
charges out of Southlake on either of these occasions; Southlake
officers simply assisted with the warrant service. The
police reports are below.
Mug shots above are from Southlake
Police Department when Bachstein was arrested twice in
2003.
