Campaign Signs....always good for controversy in local elections

Local campaign observers will confirm that every year there is a campaign sign controversy.  Not too long ago a local columnist was espousing a tree-hugger philosophy that all candidates should voluntarily limit the number of campaign signs put out.  Of course, with no monitor and no compliance penalty, the signs continued to dot the landscape on every corner in every increasing numbers.  Until the Texas Legislature, in their infinite wisdom, decided that campaign signs can be put out year round and of any size, there was always someone measuring the total square inches of signs looking to catch the opponent with a sign 1 square inch to big.  Before the enactment of signs du jour,  a member of the Colleyville Zoning Board of Adjustments couldn't contain his enthusiasm and put out signs prior to the 30 days allowed by city ordinance.

In 2005, Colleyville actually has a seat uncontested, virtually unheard of in this town.  Without the "petty politics" accusations and heated campaigns, the city seems to be yawning its way through this year's election.  After a massive turn-out crushed 5 out of 6 bond issues, with a solid don't raise our taxes vote, the steam seems to have vanished from some perennial politicos.  About 30 people voted the first day of early voting confirming interest at the ballot box has waned for the moment.

Regardless of fewer signs and even less voter interest, the 2005 Colleyville election was not without its sign dispute.  Seems that Mayoral candidate John Grace did not include the word "FOR" on his campaign signs.

Not only has the fact been noticed by an LNO viewer (see emails to the Editor) but, according to Grace, his opponent has pointed out the oversight.  LNO spoke to Grace about the accusation that his signs were out of compliance.

Grace responded that he had received at least three letters from his opponent David Kelly.  Grace said that Kelly referred to the failure to put "FOR" on the signs as a "serious matter."

Grace says that the failure to put the word "FOR" was an inadvertent mistake.  Grace says that he just received "FOR" stickers to be place on all of his signs.  Grace pointed out that he has had a crew out putting the "FOR" stickers on every sign they can find.

Grace said that he responded to Kelly and requested that he inform him of any signs that have not been corrected.  Grace stressed to LNO that as soon as he became aware of the non-compliance that he took corrective action to have additional stickers printed.

Not much of a controversy, to say the least, but it appears the politicians and wannabe politicians take what they can get in this year's election sleeper.
