On
February 17, 2005, LNO reported , among other
activities at a Colleyville town home, that
Colleyville Policeman Detective Kevin Walling, who had
recently been made Detective, apprehended a
suspected drug felon. The Detective accompanied a member
of the Tarrant County Fugitive Squad to serve a
warrant. Hearing a noise upstairs, Walling
rushed up a flight of stairs to witness the suspect
attempting to flee into the attic.
Walling captured the fellow
and retrieved a bag of speed to boot. |
It may have been Detective Walling's ability to remember and
care for individuals, among those he serves, that prevented a tragedy
on April 13, 2005.
At 12.45 am on
that morning Colleyville Police Dispatch advised Walling a
call had been received that a man with a gun was in Sparger
Park. When Walling arrived he found out the man's wife
had informed dispatch her husband had a gun and was
threatening suicide. The man was in a pick up in the
park in the front seat with a gun.
Walling discovered the individual was someone he had contact
with previously. The police report from Walling stated,
"I know (the individual) from a call I took last year at his
residence." Walling was able to talk the man out of
his truck. The man proceeded to a picnic table with the
gun. Walling's reports states that.."after about
thirty minutes I was able to talk the man away from the gun
and that Officer Bob Etheridge was able to retrieve the
weapon."
The responding officers on the scene were able to secure the
individual and he was transported to a Fort Worth hospital.
Walling's report concludes, "All officers on the scene
did an outstanding job."
It appears that Detective Walling's ability to take an
interest in individuals may been a major factor in his ability
to speak with the man from his previous contact. Because of
these officers courage and compassion, they were able to call
the wife and inform her that the gentleman was safe and being
transported to a hospital for observation.
