Burgeoning filmmakers from the Grapevine-Colleyville School District
(GCISD) will make their first appearance on the red carpet at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Metro Cinema/IMAX® Theater complex in Colleyville Town Center. |
Students were selected for their participation in the recent GCISD Student Video Festival. The young filmmakers will wield the shovels to break ground on the new theater complex—which features the first IMAX screen in Tarrant County built to showcase first-run Hollywood blockbusters. The groundbreaking is scheduled for Thursday, Dec..

“Metro Cinema is the next generation in moviegoing. IMAX lends an educational element to that experience, so it seems appropriate to include the next generation of filmmakers—those that are starting their film education—in this project from the beginning,” remarked Bill Baldridge, president of the Metro Cinema Group.
Town Center developer Charles Hodges will present the group with a $1,000 check to benefit the GCISD’s film and video program. The developers plan to continue to involve students in activities at the new complex.
Metro Cinema’s boutique theater concept ushers in a unique concept in movie entertainment—offering a total cinema experience with the latest Hollywood and independent film releases, and a complete menu of full-service dining and beverage options. The complex will feature six screens, including the IMAX screen, and two special viewing rooms.
Recent first-run films that have been digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® include: Matrix Revolutions, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Batman Begins. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: The IMAX Experience is the latest IMAX movie release.
While IMAX’s blockbuster appeal to moviegoers was attractive, city leaders were most impressed with the educational opportunities that IMAX provides. The IMAX brand became well-known through spectacular documentary films, such as Everest, To Fly!, The Living Sea, and SPACE STATION 3D. IMAX films have inspired generations of students around the globe.
IMAX theatres utilize IMAX’s 15/70 film format – ten times larger than conventional 35mm film – and deliver the clearest, brightest and steadiest images in the world, complemented by IMAX’s state-of-the-art digital surround sound system. The IMAX Theatre in Metro Cinema Colleyville will show digitally re-mastered Hollywood blockbusters, as well as original 2D and IMAX 3D films. It is expected to open this summer.
Colleyville is located in Northeast Tarrant County, adjacent to Hurst, Southlake and Grapevine. It was named one of Money magazine’s “Best Places to Live,” receiving the highest ranking of any Texas city.
Town Center is located on the southeast corner of Highway 26/Colleyville Blvd. and Hall-Johnson Road in Colleyville.
