The
purpose of the resolution, which was signed by five
members of the Board of Trustees on September 22, 2003,
was to indicate to the Administration and the teachers in
the GCISD that we appreciate their dedication and hard
work on behalf of the GCISD.
We wanted to publicly thank them for their
educational leadership, budget management and fiscal
integrity. We
also wanted to thank them for their part in the numerous
awards and in the outstanding accomplishments of the
students and teachers of the GCISD.
I think we did that effectively and it has been
heartwarming to receive the impressive number of responses
from the GCISD community thanking us for the resolution.
At
the same time at least five of the board members felt it
was important to acknowledge that some Board members have
repeatedly harassed the Administration with requests for
information that is neither “necessary nor useful” and
is thereby wasting their time, their effort and the
taxpayers money. We
believe their time could be better spent on furthering the
education of our children.
There is a process for requesting information that
is clearly spelled out in the Board Operating Procedures
and that is the process that should be followed.
It requires that a majority of the Board agree that
the Administration and staff of the GCISD should allocate
time and resources to a trustees’ request.
We
also wanted to apologize for questions and comments that
have been repeatedly made at Board Meetings by certain
trustees that call into question the integrity and ability
of Administrators and staff.
We wanted to be sure that these people understood
that this was not the opinion of a majority of the Board.
Unfortunately, certain newspaper “writers” have
tried to indicate that the purpose of the resolution was
to stifle proper oversight.
I think anyone who has observed this Board in
action would know that this is not true.
We take our responsibility as overseers very
seriously and at the same time understand that we are not
to be micromanagers of the Districts business.
Well thought out, incisive and respectful
questioning is always encouraged.
Brow beating and rudeness is not.
Those
not signing the resolution have clearly indicated their
lack of support for the teachers and administrators of the
GCISD. They
would rather criticize a highly successful, high
performing district and continue to take a tremendous
amount of administrative time away from the improvement of
the education of our children with no useful purpose.
For them, no amount of information is ever enough
to make an informed decision.
It
is too bad that that the newspapers could not write a
story about the confidence a majority of the Board has in
the wonderful Administrators and staffers of the GCISD.
I guess good news doesn’t sell newspapers.
