Baccalaureate is a
long-standing tradition planned for high school seniors
prior to graduation, cancelled by Superintendent Singer.
A column by Kevin Singer
I
have received numerous phone calls, emails and personal
visits expressing opinions about the announcement last week
that GCISD will no longer host baccalaureate services for
graduating seniors. Baccalaureate is a long-standing
tradition planned for high school seniors prior to
graduation. Although GCISD students have historically
initiated and planned baccalaureate ceremonies for their
respective graduating class, recent events have caused us to
re-examine this practice.
This
past summer, two patrons contacted me regarding their
concerns with baccalaureate services at GCISD. At that time
we began an administrative review of their concern as well
as our legal responsibilities. Subsequent to that, we
received a letter from the litigation counsel of the
Americans United for Separation of Church and State. The
letter cited the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment
as well as several Supreme Court cases that prohibit the
district from sponsoring a religious baccalaureate service.
The attorney requested that the district comply with the
Constitutional requirements to avoid legal action.
An
administrative review was conducted of the legal issues
associated with baccalaureate services. As we investigated
the law and applicable interpretations, we found that in
order to avoid constitutional problems by violating the
establishment clause, GCISD should not participate in
baccalaureate ceremonies which are sponsored or appear to be
school sponsored, held on campus, and are pervasively
religious in nature. While it could be argued that our
ceremony did not constitute a religious service, it did not
make sense to me to use limited district funds or time to
pursue the legality of this issue.
I
am very appreciative of the support by various community
churches and organizations, who this past week have
expressed interest in sponsoring or hosting a ceremony. As a
result of these generous offers by groups to assume a
leadership role in planning baccalaureate, I am confident
that the tradition of baccalaureate services will continue
in our community. |

recognized as a 2003 Legacy of Women Honoree for her
advocacy of literacy and for her creation of the
highly-popular Summer Reading Club. Each summer, Tuesday
evenings remain magical moments at the school. About 200
children and their families pile each week into the
cafeteria, and parents and volunteers help children choose
books to read. Each child leaves with books to read and a
friendly reminder to hurry back.
Susan is
being recognized in the category of Education. The
prestigioius awards luncheon, to be on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at
the Arlington Convention Center, will be to the theme of
"Melody of Hope" and will feature beloved actress
Goldie Hawn.
Friend
Suzanne Harrington, who nominated Susan for the award, said
in the nomination that "Susan Foster recognized a need
seven years ago and stepped forward to make a difference.
What she started began first in her heart." School
Principal Tim Sutton echoed the sentiment by saying
"Susan Foster's commitment and devotion to children is
unparalleled. She has broken the barrier of her classroom
walls to extend her unswerving loyalty in helping families.
It is her unselfish contributions that make her more than an
educator. She is a humanitarian."
Susan will
also be recognized by the GCISD Board of Trustees at the
Sept .22 Board Meeting. |

semifinalists. The number of GCISD students selected to this
honor is second only to the 15 semifinalists named in 2001,
according to Superintendent Kevin Singer.
Semifinalists

CHHS
Principal Dr. Marlin Stanberry expressed great pride in
these CHHS senior scholars. "I am very happy for each
of these students and their families,” he said.
“Clearly, each of these young people has numerous
abilities that include and go beyond academic achievements.
It is always exciting to see the manner in which students
such as these have chosen to develop and use their strengths
and talents. Such a commitment speaks well not only for
their future, but that of our society as well."
Semifinalists

GHS Principal
Dana Drew said he was extremely proud of these Class of 2004
seniors. “Not only are these students outstanding
individuals and a great asset to our school, but their
accomplishments are a reflection of our school’s
commitment to having an outstanding instructional
program,” said Drew. “These academic successes also come
as the result of our dedicated teaching staff and the
support of our community.”
Dr. Singer
also announced that the semifinalists and their families
will be recognized at a special reception in their honor on
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 4:30 p.m., at the Lancaster Theatre in
Grapevine. The reception is sponsored by the
Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation and anyone who
knows the family or has impacted the educational lives of
these students is invited to attend. The semifinalists will
also be recognized at a Board meeting on Oct. 27.
The district
will offer a PSAT test to sophomores, juniors and
pre-Advanced Placement freshmen on Tuesday, Oct. 21, for
$15. Students interested in taking the PSAT, which is used
