Community Rallies to Maintain Quality of Education GCISD Students Create B.R.I.T.E. Unity Chain for Presentation to 78th Texas Legislature
Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District students will unite to create the B.R.I.T.E. (Budget Reform Initiative for Texas Education) unity chain of positive messages for the Texas Legislature.  Each link in the chain will have a student¹s name, grade, school and special message for the Texas lawmakers.  During the B.R.I.T.E. unity ceremony chains created by more than 8,400 GCISD children will be combined to form one continuous chain, measuring approximately 2,125 feet or 708 yards, and estimated to encircle the entire Cannon Elementary School building.  Students will present the B.R.I.T.E. unity chain to a delegation that will take it to Austin for presentations by Representative, Vicki Truitt and Senators, Jane Nelson and Kim Brimer on the floor of the Texas Legislature.

Why:
B.R.I.T.E. is a GCISD community-based initiative that supports school finance reform to fairly fund all schools from sources other than the communities that are trying their best to educate their children.  Texas needs school finance reform so that all children can receive an excellent education.  The B.R.I.T.E. unity chain will serve to remind legislators to work to find a way to make public education better without penalizing the children.  Every child in Texas deserves a strong education.

What started as a grassroots effort at O.C. Taylor Elementary has spread throughout the district to schools who are facing some of the same issues.  The effort is being built around the Texas PTA's Day at the Capitol next Wednesday, February 5, at10:00 a.m.  State Representative Vicki Truitt plans to announce the effort from the floor, Senators Jane Nelson and Kim Brimer are planning involvement, and other legislators are also being contacted and lending support to help welcome this positive request for attention dedicated to public education. (Vicki Truitt¹s office may be contacted for comment at (512) 463-0690)

A delegation of parents, PTA members, and teachers are planning to attend the event in Austin on February 5, at 10:00 a.m.

When:
Monday, February 3, 2003, 1:00 p.m.

Where:

Career fairs to be held at both high schools
Students from both high schools will have the opportunity to get information at the career fairs planned for Jan. 28 at Grapevine High and Jan. 30 at Colleyville Heritage. Both fairs will take place from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. in the gyms.

This year all exhibitors will have information displayed on their booths linking their occupation or area of interest directly to GCISD courses of study. Booths will have signup sheets for the students to indicate if they are interested in specific GCISD courses that relate to that booth's exhibitor and signup sheets will be given to schools counselors to help with the selection of student courses for next year.

In the weeks after the fairs, schools will have open houses for several elective classes, inviting students who showed an interest in their courses and their parents.

CHHS is a "show site" for Paxton Paterson labs and on Jan. 30, in conjunction w/the Career Fair, an open house will be held in the lab at CHHS. Superintendents and administrators from around the country will visit the CHHS labs to help decide if they want to bring this to their districts and schools.

Jennings to serve dual principal roles
Paul Jennings, principal at Silver Lake Elementary in Grapevine, is wearing two principal hats through the rest of the school year, as he has assumed the additional leadership role of principal at Timberline Elementary. Timberline's principal Sandee Houston retired on Jan. 1.

"Being principal of one school is challenging enough, but I believe that Paul will successfully lead these two schools through the rest of the school year," said Dr. Kevin Singer, superintendent. "Paul's many years of experience as a principal, his rapport with students, staff and parents, and his unique sense of humor will guide him in this experience."

An employee of GCISD since 1975, Dr. Jennings has been principal much of that time, working at Colleyville Middle, Cross Timbers Middle and Silver Lake Elementary. He began work at the district as a speech and language pathologist at Cannon, then taught fourth grade there. His career path also included the job of director of Special and Personnel Services, and in his early years with the district he often drove a school bus and worked with the ground maintenance crew during summers.

Prior to joining the GCISD staff, Dr. Jennings was curriculum director for Hillsboro ISD, worked with the Texas Education Agency's Bus Driver Training program and was a consultant for bi-lingual and migrant education programs in the north Texas area.

"Bells Are Ringing!" to be performed at Colleyville Heritage High
The world sings, the stage swings to the wonderful fun of the fabulous musical comedy "Bells Are Ringing!" The Colleyville Heritage High School Departments of Drama, Choir and Band proudly present the smash musical that broke Broadway records for three years.

"Bells Are Ringing!" is the 1956 Tony Award winning romantic musical comedy about a New York City answering service called Susanswerphone. Ella Peterson is the switchboard Cinderella who finds her fella and can't stay out of the lives of her unseen subscribers. She feels that people should care about one another every day, the same way they seem to care only in times of crisis. Ella's clients may enjoy her personalized attention, but her cousin Sue, the owner of Susanswerphone, warns Ella to stop meddling in the lives of her clients, particularly playboy/playwright Jeffery Moss. Although Jeffery has only encountered Ella as the voice of 63-year-old "Mom," Ella dreams of a telephone love affair, admitting that for her, it's a perfect relationship.

Ella plays a gallery of colorful characters in her quest to help other subscribers, like the dentist who composes songs, the live wire actor who's always getting the busy signal, and once in a while a wrong number like Sandor who uses Susanswerphone as a front for his bookie ring. Love! Lunacy! Gangsters and Gowns! Songs that dazzle and delight, like the timeless hits "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over." Book and lyrics are by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, music by Jule Styne.

Natalie Berry and David Smith star as Ella and Jeffery. Also starring Leanne Olson as Sue and Ted Dollar as Sandor. The cast includes Demarest Thompson, Ian Bangs, Daniel Maitland, David Capps, Brian Brissman, Chase Thomas, Eric Cullather, Michael Mischo, Jessica Novak, Kendall Kirkham, Chris McCall, Sammy Hans, Allison Beall, Jessica Addy, Jamie Arendt, Jeff Baron, Lee Bond, Catie Choate, Erin Ritch, Megan Gaffney, Ben Isham, Mallory Kirkham, Matt Lester, Katie Lynch, Jenny Lyons, Nick Moore, Whitney Pickett, Brian Retchless, Emo Rosas, Amanda Saunders, Scott Saunders, Meghan Schutte, Courtney Ussery and Brooke Yarborough.

Under the artistic direction of Jennifer Phagan, musical direction by Danny Detrick, choreography by Jami Martin, and orchestra led by Jennifer Vowels, "Bells Are Ringing!" runs Jan. 30, 31, Feb. 1, 6, 7 and 8 at CHHS.
