College
Board names AP Scholars
One hundred and eighty-two students in Grapevine-Colleyville
ISD have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College
Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the
college-level AP Exams. Students took AP Exams in May 2002 after
completing challenging college-level
courses at their high schools.
One hundred ten students at Colleyville Heritage High and
seventy-two students at Grapevine High achieved the AP scholar
designation. The College Board's Advanced Placement Program® offers
students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses
while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced
placement, or both for successful performance on the end-of-course
AP Exams. Almost 14 percent of the more than 900,000 high school
students in 14,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams
performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of
AP Scholar.
The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on
the number of year-long courses and exams (or their equivalent
semester-long courses and exams):
- National
AP Scholar Award is awarded to students who earn an average
grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken,
and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Two
students at Colleyville Heritage high school qualified for the
National AP Scholar Award: Proshad Nemati and Benjamin Weidman.
- Thirty-six
students at CHHS and 19 students at GHS qualified for the AP
Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade
of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher
on five or more of these exams.
- Twenty-two
CHHS students and 11 GHS students qualified for the AP
Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at
least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on
four or more of these exams.
- Fifty-two
CHHS students and forty-two GHS students qualified for the AP
Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Examinations,
with grades of 3 or higher.
Of
this year's GCISD award recipients, 24 at CHHS and 12 at GHS are
sophomores or juniors. These students have at least one more year in
which to complete college-level work and possibly earn another AP
Scholar Award.
Most
of the nation's colleges and universities award credit, advanced
placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams.
More than 1,400 institutions award a full year's credit (sophomore
standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying
grades. Thirty-four AP Exams are offered in a wide variety of
subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice and free-response
(essay or problem-solving) questions (except for the Studio Art exam
which evaluates students' original artwork).
For
more information about the College Board or the AP exams, visit the College
Board website.

It
is a dark and stormy night, you are gathered with the other guests
in the study at Boddy Mansion, when suddenly, lightening strikes,
thunder rolls and the lights go out. There is a scream in the dark.
The lights come back on to reveal that your host, Mr. Boddy, is
lying dead in the middle of the room, a victim of foul play.
Was it Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the wrench? Was it
Mrs. Peabody with the candlestick? The answer lies within these
walls if you have the courage to solve the mystery.
