Colleyville couple turns their passion for outdoor activities into a local Day Camp success.

Jennifer Patterson, Adventure Team Outreach

Jennifer and Travis Patterson have a passion for the outdoors.  In fact, their passion was the catalyst for the two finding each other and partnering up in every way.  Growing up, Jennifer's family was an outdoor machine.  Every year the family tried to visit a new park where they could camp out with nature.  Jennifer said she grew up hunting and fishing and outdoor activities has always been important.

Who would know?  A graduate of Baylor with a Degree in Psychology she spent several years in the Mortgage Banking business.  But alas, she met Travis, who is an Eagle Scout in his own right, and the sparks flew.

This couple could be the poster children for "overachievers in outdoor activities and businesses."  Not only do they own and operate Adventure Day Camps, but Travis is also the manager and oversees 10 Marine Quest operations with facilities across the North Texas area, including Eagle Mountain Marina, Joe Pool Marina, Lake Country Marina, Chandler's Landing Marina, Captain's Cove Marina, Texoma Marina, Hidden Cove Marina, Marshall Ford Marina (Austin), and Anderson Mill Marina (Austin).

Travis also has his stamp on Texas Boating Magazine as its Editor, along with Adventure and Recreation, a magazine about just that in north Texas.

These outdoor entrepreneurs also stage the Texas Outdoor Expo at Grapevine Lake each year and host scores of different vendors and a large public attendance.

Jennifer's Day camps, in Grapevine, are held at the Meadowmere Park lakeside.  She has 8 weeks of camps at this location and typically about 40 children in each camp.  The set times are from 9 am until 4:30 pm, however she can make arrangements for those who may have to drop their children off earlier or later.

Many times the experience is a first for many of the children in an outdoor setting.  The sample activities including, archery, swimming, nature walks, hiking skills, insects and reptile knowledge, camping skills, first aid, kayaking, outdoor cooking, adventure games, arts and crafts, water guns, exploration, kite flying, treasure hunts, target shooting, fishing, horseshoes and water balloons.

The camps have provided a memorable experience for hundreds of children over the past three summers in the DFW area.

Jennifer said that she also teaches the children about some modern tools such as GPS systems.  Typically, she maintains no more than a six to one ratio of her instructors and the children in attendance.

Jennifer emphasized, "We are very proactive in teaching kids outdoor skills."

Jennifer has frequent visits from other businesses and organizations providing additional educational entertainment concerning outdoor sports and how to enjoy outdoor recreation safely.

Fees for the camps are $200 per week, with a discount provided for more than one child.  Jennifer said that she hopes that readers come away from this article with a renewed interest in outdoor activities.  "We want people to get out of the house, get the kids away from the computer games and for families to enjoy the outdoors in a safe and productive way," concluded Jennifer.  Visit the website or
