2006 Grapevine
When Sherry Jaquess first laid eyes on the beautiful old historical Dorris
House in Grapevine, she knew immediately that the 1896 home on College
Street would be a fabulous place for a salon and spa.

Celebrating
her third year in business this December, the Renata Salon and Day
Spa in Grapevine is the results dreams are made of.
While this beautiful hostess today is considered to be one of the
premier operators in the business, she could not have imagined
even being in the business just a few years ago.
Sherry had a career in the real estate industry, the most recent
had been as a property tax consultant. Sherry had
formed a partnership in another firm and the company had become
successful. While she had initially attended college with
the idea of being a school teacher, her knowledge in the real
estate industry resulted in a career path.
Sherry, single mom to two kids had always planned for her children
to attend a traditional college. When her youngest, Lauren,
said she intended to study as a hair stylist, Sherry was not happy
with the decision. In fact, Sherry told Lauren, if that was
her direction, she would have to pay for schooling on her
own. However, after witnessing Lauren's determination to
make her own way, Sherry relented and helped Lauren financially
with the expense of school.
That decision eventually evolved into the mom/daughter team
putting together Renata's. |

Sherry's business was
named one of the "30th hottest Salons" in the nation by
Color & Style Magazine.

The
beautiful 2 1/2 story Victorian home was built in 1896 by
Dr.Tom Dorris. Dr. Dorris was the official doctor
for the railroad and prospered after its arrival in 1888.
The home is eligible for designation as National Register
Historic Home |
Circumstances were
such that the previous tenant had just recently moved from the
home when Sherry first saw the beautiful historical home.
She said she called the owner and agreed to rent the building
before she even knew what it would cost.
A considerable amount of work was needed on the old home to bring
it up to code for a salon and spa. Sherry launched into
getting the house ready, dipping into savings to make the
necessary changes. At the same time she decided to move to
Grapevine and purchased her own historical home, built in the
1930s, on Franklin Street.
With both structures needing work, naysayers told Sherry she had
taken on too much and would never get the business ready to start
her new business that January. Sherry said that once she
became involved with the business, she realized that she
really had not liked her previous profession she had been
working in since 1985. She has never looked back and
eventually sold her interest. |

Sherry's facility is a
Five Star Salon & Day Spa today, however three years ago she was
scrambling to fix plumbing in the 100+ year old home, along
with a myriad of other challenges.
|
Despite
hurdles like plumbing replaced inside of walls of various
dimensions, carpet that had to be replaced only to find the floor
underneath had to be reconstructed with period matching wood, and
moving in and restoring her own home simultaneously, Sherry proved
the doubters wrong and opened up on time.
She began selling gift certificates in December and had actually
built up quite an initial group of clientele when she first opened.
When the spa first opened, Sherry said she was scrambling to cover
all the expenses. "Every decoration in the home was for
sale," Sherry said, "When I sold something I would take
the money and rush out to buy another item to display for
sale."
Based on the fact her business was named one of the top 30 hottest
salons in America by Color & Style Magazine and named a Five
Star Salon & Day Spa by NewBeauty Magazine,
the lean days seem a far off memory. |

Sherry's daughter
Lauren made a decision on a career as a hair stylist. Today
Lauren and her mom Sherry can be seen working together in what has
been described as the premier Salon & Day Spa in the entire
Dallas/Ft.Worth area. In June 2006, NewBeauty
Magazine recognized the Grapevine business.

Sherry said she added employees as her business has grown, today

has been preserved in areas like the stair case above. |

staircase to the top of the 2 1/2 story homes.
Sherry said that part of her mission is to maintain the
warmth of comfort of a home while providing personal
attention to each customer. She is committed to her
staff's ongoing education in the latest advances. Next
month, two of her staff will are being sent to New
York for an industry trade show. |
Asked what she would
like readers to come away with after reading this article, Sherry
said, "I want them to know our commitment to
hospitality. Everyone, and I mean everyone will feel welcome
at our home. We constantly train our staff on the importance of
customer relations and the greatest respect for every
visitor. While I work to greet everyone that comes here, it
is my staff that is providing the service, it is our staff that
makes us what we are."
Renata is located at 224 E. College Street, just off historic Main
Street, in Grapevine. Sherry can be reached at 8117.488.3444
