Doctor wanted to help bring relief of suffering

If Joe had lived today, he would probably have been considered a liberal, or at least with liberal tendencies.  That is, if you are prone to labeling people.  He didn’t consider himself all that liberal, but he did have a few things he disagreed with.

Joe was a physician, actually studied at some of the finer schools, including medical school.  And one thing that Joe was interested in, as are most doctors, is the relief of suffering.  I mean, isn’t that why doctors go into the field of medicine?  They want to help people who are suffering.  Well, we have it on good authority that was Joe’s primary impetus.  And although Joe never published any of his medical findings in his life time, we do have several other written pieces to go by.  Some are written in Joe own hand, some by others who knew him.

HISTORY CORRECTION
You know, when you’re the first at anything, there’s going to be problems.  And I guess it really doesn’t matter what it is that you’re first at.  Some people will hate you.  Others will love you.  And there will be that big bunch of folks who just kind of sit back and watch carefully to see what you are all about.

I guess that was probably true with Charles Lindbergh.  He was hailed as the first person the fly the Atlantic Ocean nonstop.  But news reports tell us that a bunch of people thought it was wrong to do it.  And another bunch just didn’t believe it at all.

That also happened when Neil Armstrong first stepped foot on the moon.  The day he took off, there were people at Cape Canaveral protesting the launch.  And still today, there are people who believe that the entire space program is a government plot, and we never have flown into space.

Title: She didn't become President,
however...

Little nine-year-old Mo spent the whole weekend at home practicing with the jump rope.  She wanted to get really good at it so maybe the other girls at school would want to play with her.  All she really wanted was to fit in.  She was a pretty little Jewish girl and her family was reasonably well-off financially.  But her schoolmates simply did not accept her.

She may have been a teeny bit overweight, but that shouldn’t have mattered.  She was very smart and precocious.  She liked to sing and loved poetry.  At one time she had ambitions to be president of the United States.  But for whatever reason, friends were hard to come by for this little girl.

WWI Could have been averted?

World War I was called the war to end all wars.  A total of 65 million soldiers fought in that war; 21,000,000 of them were wounded and nearly 9,000,000 killed.  Historians have spent a whole bunch of years trying to figure out what that war was all about, and many of them point straight to the emperor of Germany, Kaiser Wilhelm the Second, as the culprit who engineered the whole thing.

Wilhelm was the grandson of William the First of Germany and of Britain’s Queen Victoria.  He was well known for his tendency to talk too much.  He seemed to know nothing about tact and diplomacy.  London newspapers loved to repeat his outbursts.  And when they reported him saying that the German people just didn’t like the British, the ill will between the two countries shot up overnight.  Some say Wilhelm didn’t really want war, but he didn’t seem to mind the idea if it would help him reach his most prized goal, which was to turn Germany into a great empire, a country to be reckoned with.

1500 year absence

Peter knew it was coming.  Darn right he did.  He could hear about it in the newspapers, the conversation on the street, even in the private meetings and conferences he was privileged to because of his high position.  He didn’t know when, of course, but he darn sure knew it was coming.

Peter was Baron Pierre de Coubertin.  That’s right.  He was French.  But nothing unusual there since he lived in France.  And because of his rank as a baron, part of the French royalty, he was often included in some of the most sensitive and confidential discussions about his country and his government.
