Innovative program first of
its kind in Texas
Colleyville local television
news viewers witnessed the
city's police department
featured on every channel with
their innovative "Stop Thief"
program. There was local
Mike Muhm on television hanging
his mirror sign sending messages
that his vehicle would not be
one of opportunity.
Colleyville police are enlisting
residents to send a message to
criminals that the city is "not
open for business." The
department has initiated the
"Stop Thief" program to deter
car burglaries. The new program
began on Monday March 10th and
is the first of its kind in
Texas.
Chief Tommy Ingram was
quoted, "Vehicle burglaries are
crimes of opportunity. If
citizens can send a message to
thieves that the opportunity
isn't present, those thieves
will likely move on to another
target."
The program is said to also
educate and remind the public to
remove valuables from the car as
a critical part of stopping the
crimes of opportunity.
This week the Police Department
of Roanoke released information,
as reported on LNO, of a rash of
car burglaries and most were in
circumstances where valuables
could be seen in the car.
The "Stop Thief" program is
simple, consisting of a printed
placard that is placed on the
car's rearview mirror each time
it is parked. The placard
serves as a notice to potential
thieves that there are no
valuables in the car; it also
serves as a reminder to the
owner to remove any valuables
including bags, purses,
briefcases, money, laptops,
radar detectors, etc. The
placards are free and can be
obtained at the Colleyville
Justice Center, 5201 Riverwalk
Drive in Colleyville.
The crime rate is Colleyville
is one of the lowest in the DFW
area and the lowest in NE
Tarrant. However, vehicle
burglaries are one of the most
common calls received by the
Colleyville Police.
