Morning Mile Program in High Gear at Keller
ISD’s Liberty Elementary
by
Nelson Thibodeaux
Students at
Liberty Elementary School in the Keller
Independent School District have found an
active way to begin their day with the
Morning Mile program.
Fitzness International’s Morning Mile is a
before-school walking/running program that
gives children the chance to build good
fitness habits while enjoying fun, music and
friends. It’s also supported by a wonderful
system of rewards, which keeps students
highly motivated and frequently
congratulated. It’s a proven project geared
toward fighting childhood obesity and
increasing the physical activity levels of
school children nationwide.
Organized locally by Liberty Elementary
parents, the campus students are invited to
join their friends and classmates at the
campus at 7:15 a.m. each morning the weather
is good. Students walk or run for as many
laps as they are comfortable with, earning
rewards as they accumulate miles.
After five miles, students get a necklace
chain with a colorful sneaker charm. They
earn another charm for each five miles
completed, and once they complete 100 miles,
they’re presented with a charm with the
number “100” on it.
Four Liberty Elementary students have
already hit the 100-mile mark since starting
the program in September 2011. Each morning,
approximately 85 students come out for the
program, and overall 297, or 61 percent of
Liberty’s students, have participated in the
program.
In the 42 days the students at Liberty have
participated in the program this year,
they’ve run a total of 5,877 miles,
averaging about 140 miles each day.
Keller ISD’s Willis Lane Elementary also
recently started a Morning Mile program at
its campus joining the more than 50
elementary programs currently ongoing
throughout the country.
