by
Nelson Thibodeaux
State Rep. Vicki Truitt (R-Keller) is
encouraging all interested students from
Texas House District 98 to contact her
office to apply for the Texas Armed Services
Scholarship Program.
The Texas Legislature created the Texas
Armed Services Scholarship Program to
encourage students to participate in Reserve
Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs at
civilian colleges. The Governor and Lt.
Governor may each appoint two students, and
each state senator and state representative
may appoint one student to receive the
conditional scholarship.
A student may receive up to $10,000 per
academic year for up to four years (out of
the five years allowed for graduation)
toward undergraduate education at any Texas
university with an active ROTC program. This
is a conditional scholarship, and if the
student does not fulfill the terms, the
$10,000 initial scholarship must be paid
back.
Recipients must commit to four years of
service as a member of the Texas Army
National Guard, Texas Air National Guard,
Texas State Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S.
Merchant Marine or as a commissioned officer
in any branch of the armed services of the
United States.
"I am thrilled to be able to offer this
scholarship opportunity to one of our local
students," stated Rep. Truitt. She
continued, "This ought to be a big help to a
student who is interested in serving our
nation in the military."
To be considered for nomination for a Texas
Armed Services Scholarship, a student must
meet two of the following four academic
criteria at the time of application:
• Be on track to graduate, or has graduated
high school with the Distinguished
Achievement Program (DAP) or the
International Baccalaureate Program (IB);
• Have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher;
• Achieve a college readiness score on the
SAT (1590) or ACT (23);
• Be ranked in the top one-third of the
prospective high school graduating class.
Interested students should contact
Representative Truitt's office as soon as
possible as deadlines are fast-approaching.
Call (817) 488-4098 or (512) 463-0690 for
details. More information on the scholarship
program may be found at
