Grapevine-Colleyville ISD administrators have been notified that a former teacher has been taken into custody by federal authorities. We understand the investigation involves accusations of transmitting a video file of child pornography. The former teacher, Daniel Oberlender, resigned his position on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012.

We have confirmed with investigators that they do not believe the allegations against Mr. Oberlender involve any GCISD students, past or present. GCISD leaders acted promptly in response to this situation and will cooperate fully with investigators if needed.

Mr. Oberlender has served as the music teacher and choir director at Cross Timbers Middle School since 1995.

The teacher is Daniel Oberlender, 45, is accused of using the Internet and Skype to share a video files of a minor engaged in sexually explicit actions, according to the U.S. attorney's office. Federal prosecutors filed a criminal complaint after a search warrant at Oberlender's home in Grapevine on Tuesday.

Oberlender resigned from his position immediately.

Federal agents became aware of Oberlender after interviewing a member of a group advertising itself as a "free, gay, adult community featuring images, groups, erotic stories, social networking, personals, dating and chat," according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.

A member of the group told agents he met several people online who were sexually interested in children. A review of Oberlender's computer found a movie that included a boy between ages 6 and 10 depicted in a sexually suggestive position, according to the complaint.

Federal agents requested financial records from Skype showing that Oberlender used a credit card to pay for the movie in August. Oberlender admitted transmitting the video, according to the complaint stated.

Investigators said that they do not believe that the allegations involve any Grapevine-Colleyville students. Oberlender has served as the music teacher and choir director at Cross Timbers Middle School since 1995, according to GCISD.

If convicted, he could face up to a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.
