Local resident, Scott Murray, hosted The Dallas All Sports Association (DASA) Banquet on Monday, June 18. The event was held at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. DASA was founded in 1965 by Field Scovell. Field's vision was a "social organization, philanthropic in nature, to award recognition and scholarship grants to deserving individuals and groups." One of the most significant of these awards is named after Field himself. The Field Scovell Award was instituted to perpetuate the countless contributions of Field Scovell to the advancement of sports in Dallas and is presented to the region's outstanding sports figure. The selection is based on outstanding morals, citizenship, integrity and dedication, as well as achievement. The winner of the Field Scovell Award for the year 2000 was Gil Brandt for his outstanding achievement in regional athletics as the Vice President of Personnel Development of the Dallas Cowboys in the '60s, '70s and '80s. During Brandt's venue, he developed a number of scouting techniques still used by the NFL today and helped the Cowboys to win two Super Bowls. Named for one of the most prominent names in sports, noted gentleman, businessman and philanthropist Lamar Hunt, the national award is given annually to a recipient chosen by the DASA board of directors. It was initially presented in 2000 to golf legend Byron Nelson. The 2001 recipient was Don Shula. As the winningest head coach in the NFL history, Don received the award for his lifetime achievement, dignity and sportsmanship both on the football field and off. During his 33 seasons as an NFL head coach, Shula compiled an incredible 347-173-6 record including two Super Bowls and the only perfect season in NFL history in 1972.
The Big D Award is given to the person or persons who have most enriched Dallas sports by their achievements. The 2001 recipient was Troy Aikman. Troy received the award for his athletic prowess on the field, and perhaps even more for his contributions and class off the field.
