Are you getting enough fiber? If not, it is important to increase fiber in your diet to improve bowel health and decrease cancer risk. An easy way would be to make a sandwich using whole grain bread instead of white bread, which adds an extra 3 to 4 grams of fiber. Add three lettuce leaves and two thick tomato slices for one additional gram. Spread on two tablespoons of hummus, for 1.5 grams of fiber. You now have a sandwich with 5 to 6 grams of fiber, about ¼ of the RDA, which is 25 grams per day. If you have any questions or would like more recipes and health tips on fiber, call Baylor Grapevine's registered dietitians at the Nutrition Counseling, Lifestyle Weight Management Center at (817) 329-2569.
