Wireless Plans Control Center Groundbreaking
Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless provider, will
hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at the
site of its new The facility, one of only two in the United States, will house a network equipment center, telephone switch center, and the local network administration headquarters. It eventually could house more than 1,000 employees. "We chose the Southlake location after several months of careful consideration, and the city partnered with us to find the perfect location," said Dick Lynch, executive vice president and chief technical officer for Verizon Wireless. "This will be a long-term, state-of-the-art facility that will enhance our superior network quality and reliability across the nation, allowing us to better serve our customers." The Verizon Wireless NOCC project will be located on approximately 25 acres at the northeast corner of State Highway 114 and Dove Road, on property owned by Maguire Partners, developers of Solana. The first phase will consist of approximately 175,000 square feet employing an estimated 400 people with ultimate growth potential to 350,000 square feet and 1,000 employees. Initial estimates set a Phase I construction value of $20 million. A Phase I ground breaking is scheduled for summer 2001, with move-in expected in fall 2002. "We are very excited to have Verizon Wireless as part of our corporate community," said Mayor Rick Stacy. "The importance of this facility to their national operations is very prestigious for Southlake and exemplifies the continued corporate excellence we anticipate along Highway 114." Verizon Wireless evaluated multiple sites during the past several months and chose Southlake based on several factors. "We worked with Verizon's staff to develop a fairly creative incentive package," said Economic Development Director Greg Last. "This package is tailored to the needs of Verizon Wireless and will include some tax abatements, reductions in processing fees and incentives for growth." The incentives are expected to save Verizon Wireless approximately $276,502 during a four-year period and provide Southlake with revenues of approximately $662,678 during that same time period. The Southlake City Council approved the tax abatement package related to the Verizon Wireless project on June 19. On June 14, the Southlake City Council and the Planning & Zoning Commission approved the site plan and preliminary plat for the project. ______________________________________ About Verizon Wireless Verizon Wireless is the largest wireless communications provider in the U.S. with more than 27 million wireless voice and data customers.
