With Byron and Peggy
Nelson as honorary chairpersons, Metroport meals On Wheels
welcomed 460 golfers to it tenth annual golf tournament on Monday,
June 4. Morning and afternoon flights were held on both the
Hills and Hogan courses at Trophy Club Country Club. This
tournament is an event that is eagerly anticipated by golfers each
year.
The tournament is
also a gift of love and support from Peggy and Byron Nelson who
have bestowed their time, energy and names to this tournament
since its inception. As honorary chairpersons, they have
helped guide and grow the tournament and have been a compelling
presence. Their personal involvement, including Byron being
photographed with each foursome, has created a tournament rich in
tradition and personal attention.
In special
recognition of Byron and Peggy Nelson's commitment to Metroport
Meals On Wheels, NBC 5 Sportscaster Scott Murray made a surprise
visit to Byron as he posed for pictures with golfers on the 18th
hole. Scott highlighted Byron's involvement with the
tournament and then presented a perpetual trophy to Byron and

Over 100
volunteers worked tirelessly to keep the day running
smoothly. NEC America, Inc. returned as title sponsor
for the fourth year. Major sponsors included American
Airlines, Synergy Properties Group, Bates Container, Inc., Harris
Methodist HEB Hospital, Star-Telegram, The Classic Cafe, Oakmont
Enterprises, UniFirst, and Wells Fargo. Chick-fil-A,
Coca-Cola, Mountain Pure Water, Krispy Kreme, Outback Steakhouse,
Owens Country Sausage, Pepsi, Evian and Trophy Club Country Club
made sure that all the golfers and volunteers had enough to eat
and drink during the festivities.

The wind
challenged the golfers' games, but is also made for a fantastic
day. Allen Samuels Dodge, James Wood Motors and Park Place
Lexus sponsored six hole-in-one prize holds. Although the
attempts were noble, no one made a hold-in-one. Master of
ceremonies, the honorable State Representative Vick Truitt,
recognized the winning golfers at the awards dinner following the
tournament.

The golf tournament raises important monies to support MMOW's
programs while creating awareness about MMOW. Metroport
meals On Wheels provides home-delivered meals for those
individuals whose needs include Monday through Saturday nutrition
and personal visits in Roanoke, Trophy Club, Westlake, Marshall
Creek, Argyle, Justin, Haslet, Keller, Southlake, North Richland
Hills, Colleyville, Bedford and Grapevine. MMOW also
provides congregate luncheons ad activities for healthy seniors
weekly in Roanoke, Justin, Haslet and Southlake and twice monthly
in Colleyville.
Not only does the tournament introduce MMOW to program
participants, in enlists the support of local businesses and
merchants who have become eager partners in serving the elderly,
chronically ill and disabled in our community. The
tournament is invaluable as it also generates a wonderful corps of
volunteers who bring joy and friendship along with daily meals to
our seniors.
Chair Jodi Sanders reports that this year's tournament exceeded
all expectations. "We registered 50 more golfers than
last year and look forward to their continuing involvement with
our tournament. We could not stage a tournament of this size
without the support of all our communities. We especially
appreciate the professionalism and expertise of everyone at Trophy
Club who works so hard to help make this such a dynamic
event."
Preliminary figures indicate that this year's tournament will
surpass last year's efforts. Final figures will be announced
at the committee meeting on June 29th.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MMOW,
a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a local, independent
charity that receives no federal or state funding. MMOW
serves participants whose needs are not addressed by other resources. The positive interaction that MMOW brings
provides an important support system which enables participants to
live with dignity and independence in their own homes for as long
as possible. MMOW also offers families reassurance that
someone is checking on their loved one daily and, in an emergency,
serving as a vital link to medical services. The Senior
Center Lunch Programs offer weekly congregate meals as well as
connectivity and socialization for seniors. MMOW

For the first 12
year, volunteers cooked meals in their homes and delivered Monday
through Friday. Since 1992, MMOW has contracted with local restaurants to cook meals and has expanded service to include 13
cities. Saturday meal delivery was added in 1993. Our
loyal corps of 600 volunteers regularly provides over 10,000 hours
per year in support of the home-delivered and senior center meals
programs. As
a nonprofit organization, MMOW depends on the communities to help
support its mission. Two major events that generate substantial
support for MMOW are this annual golf tournament in
June and a gourmet dinner prepared by The Classic Cafe of Roanoke
and Southlake in the fall. Sadie's Dry Goods, MMOW's resale
shop located in Roanoke, provides a ongoing source of revenue for
programs for seniors. MMOW
is neighbors helping neighbors. This wonderful group of
people is dedicated to the seniors in our community. MMOW
nourishes the elderly with food for the body, and more
importantly, care and compassion for the soul. --------------------------------------------------------------- Did
