Baylor
Health Care System and Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine broke
ground to begin building a $50 million six-story patient tower on
Monday, June 18, 2001. The expansion will nearly double the
number of licensed patient beds at the medical center from 104
beds to 197.
The
patient tower expansion project, which is the largest expansion in
the medical center's history, will enhance cardiology services
with the beginning of an open-heart surgery program, as well as
women's services, which include expanding the special care
nursery. In an effort to meet the demand of inpatient
admission, medical/surgical beds will also increase. "We
are excited to break ground and get this project underway,"
says Mark Hood, president of Baylor Medical Center at
Grapevine. "We hope to be completed by Summer
2003."

Mayor Donna Arp provided the invocation for the ceremony and spoke
briefly about Mark. Mayor Arp referenced a quote that
states, "Anyone can steer a ship when the waters are
calm." She continued, "Mark has done an
exceptional job of steering this ship in times of unprecedented growth, unstable national financial conditions for our hospitals
across the country and the overriding need for capital to serve
our community. I have served with Mark since 1994 when he
came to Baylor. He has impacted all of us, all of us here
and all of us in the community, with that never failing
calmness."
