gcisd holiday closings

GCISD schools will be closed Nov. 19-23 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Administrative building will close for the holiday on Nov. 22 and 23.

teachers and staff invited to celebration for scholarship semifinalists

GCISD teachers and staff who have taught or worked with any of the district’s 15 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are invited to help the students celebrate their successes at a reception on Nov. 14, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Students will be honored at the Reception Hall of the Lancaster Theatre at the Palace Theatre, 300 South Main Street in Grapevine.

Board meeting locations changed

Construction in GCISD’s Board of Trustees meeting room makes it necessary to relocate the board’s next three meetings. Locations are as follows:

Study Session, Nov. 12, 6 p.m. – Grapevine Middle School Library
Regular Meeting, Nov. 26, 7 p.m. – Colleyville Heritage High Auditorium
Regular Meeting, Dec. 10, 6 p.m. – Grapevine High Library

Parents and employees invited to provide input during audit

A curriculum management audit will be conducted for GCISD during Nov. 26-29 and parents and employees have an opportunity to provide comments, supportive statements or express concerns to the audit team. This audit will serve as a diagnostic tool designed to help improve the quality of curriculum and instruction functions in the district. On Nov. 27, teachers and other district staff are invited to meet with the auditors between 4:30-5:30 p.m.; parents may meet with auditors between 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Interviews will be conducted in the Administration Building, 3050 Ira E. Woods Avenue, Grapevine. For more information, contact Public Information, 817/251-5505.

Mustang Band wins third and heads for 4A state contest: Panther Band earn
sixth place in 5A competition

Grapevine High School Mustang Band advances to the 2001 U.I.L. State Marching Band Contest on Monday, Nov. 5th at Baylor University's Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas, after placing third at the U.I.L. Area "C" Marching Band contest on Oct. 27th. The Mustang Band is scheduled to perform in preliminary competition at 2:30 p.m.

Also on Oct. 27th, the CHHS Panther Band "roared" to a sixth place finish at the highly competitive Duncanville Marching Invitational. In the final contest for most of the 5-A bands in the state, ( it is a 4-A state year), the Panther Band placed sixth in both preliminaries and finals, achieving its highest finish ever in an all 5-A contest. The band's award winning show, "Portraits of Spain," received straight superior ratings and was a finalist at all contests entered.

The two hundred and sixty five member G.H.S. Mustang Band was one of eighteen class 4A bands from around the North Central and North East Texas area who competed for the privilege to advance to the state marching band contest.

Grapevine, along with Mesquite Poteet and Wylie High School will represent this area and advance to the state preliminary competition. Carroll, Birdville, and Waxahachie High School will represent Area "B" in the U.I.L. contest.

There are 220 class 4A bands in the state of Texas and a total 19 bands bands have earned a trip to the state preliminary contest this year. Seven bands will be chosen from those 19 bands to advance to the U.I.L. State Finals to be held that evening at 7:00 p.m. Both competitions are open to the public. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students for each session (preliminaries and finals). An adult combo ticket is available for $15, which will admit one to both the preliminary and final sessions.

There is no student combo ticket. Tickets are on sale the day of the contest only.

Adult classes offered at GHS

Two classes are available at Grapevine High to adults in the area at no charge. Adult ESL classes are offered at GHS every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. New students should report to room 106. Free childcare is available for children between the ages of 5 and 12.

GED classes are also available at GHS every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. New students should report to room 108.

Kids & Parents invited to "Snuggle Up and Read Night" at Bransford Elementary 

In celebration of Family Literacy, Bransford Elementary will host a "Snuggle Up and Read Night" and Book Fair on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 6:30-7:15 p.m. at the school.

The Book Fair will be open from 6-8 p.m. for families to purchase books. Families are encouraged to wear their pajamas and bring a pillow or blanket to spread out for a family reading time from 6:30-7 p.m. Milk and cookies will be served to families where they are "snuggled up" to read.

At 7 p.m., everyone will meet back in the cafeteria for a special story time.  “Snuggle Up and Read Night” at Bransford in being held in conjunction with National Children's Book Week. The school’s Fall Book Fair is Nov. 12-16 and features books and computer software from Scholastic Book Fairs. The book fair will be open daily from 7:50 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. except on Friday when the it will close at noon.

Dove Elementary

"Becoming a Love and Logic Parent" will be presented on Nov. 6, 7-8:30 p.m. in the Dove Elementary School library. Presenting by the Dove PTA, this is a parenting program designed by The Cline/Fay Institute that uses a simple and practical approach to help parents find answers to those most challenging moments in child rearing. Instructors for this course are GCISD counselors Barbara Windom from Bransford Elementary, Lynne Bertinelli from Dove Elementary, and Leigh Hockenbrough, 3rd grade teacher from Bransford Elementary. Crafts and refreshments provided. Childcare will be available for a fee of $2 per child.

Calendar of Events:

  • Dove Elementary School night at McDonald's on Kimball Dr. in Southlake is Tuesday, Nov. 6 is. Eat at McDonald's between 5-8 p.m. and a portion of the sales go directly to Dove Elementary School.
  • Dine at Red Robin on Wm. D. Tate on Nov. 13 and Red Robin will donate 15% of the cost of your bill to Dove Elementary.
  • Progress reports will be issued Nov. 8.
  • On Thursday Nov. 13, Dove Elementary School is celebrating meeting sales goals by having a Mega Event in the gym. This event is for all Dove Elementary School students and includes a rock climbing wall, a jump house, and many activities for the children.
  • Dove Elementary School PTA November meeting is Nov. 15 in the cafeteria at 6:45 p.m. First grade students will perform a variety of plays and fables.
  • PJ'S Day is on Nov. 16 at Dove Elementary School. Students are encouraged to wear your pj's and get comfy at school that Friday.
  • Dove’s CiCi's Pizza night is Nov. 27. CiCi's Pizza on Park Blvd. will contribute a portion of the sales from that night to Dove Elementary School.
  • Students selected by their teachers as Dynamic Dolphins will get to come to the cafeteria and eat ice cream with the principal Nov. 29 at 1:45 p.m.

CHHS Pantera Dance Team

The CHHS Pantera dance team invites the public to the second annual "Strike It Rich" Dinner Auction on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. in the CHHS cafeteria. The public is invited to enjoy dinner, performances by the dance team and get an early start on holiday shopping. Silent and live auction items will be available. Tickets are $7 available in advance from a Pantera dancer or at the door. Contact Nancy Maddox for more information at 817/540-4453.

CHHS Pantera Chorale

The CHHS Panther Chorale will be featured in the Judy Collins Christmas Concert at the Bass Hall on Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets, ranging in price from $16.95-$43.50, are on sale through the CHHS Choir Booster club or through the Bass Hall box office. CHHS Jazz band

The CHHS Jazz Band will be in concert on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the CHHS auditorium. The concert will feature student performances by the lab band directed by Loy Studer and the jazz band directed by Duane Minnick.

The HMS band directed by Jim Pritchard will be guest performers as well. Admission is free.

CHHS Campus Excellence Committee meeting

The next meeting of the CHHS Campus Excellence Committee, the site based decision making committee will be Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. Contact committee chairperson, Lauren Sheahan at 817/358-4709 for agenda information and input.

CHHS pantherettes

The Pantherettes, the junior varsity dance team for Colleyville Heritage High, will work Saturday, Nov. 3 at Sonic at Hall-Johnson in Grapevine. 

All tips will go toward the group's competition fees. The group is under the direction of Michelle Caton.

ghs mustang cross country teams

Grapevine High School's Mustang Cross Country teams will travel to Lubbock for the regional championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Mae Simmons Park. The teams have qualified at the regional meet for 21 consecutive years hope to continue that trend by winning their third regional championship on Saturday.

The boys’ team won their fourth district crown in 21 years at a recent meet. Leading the team were four runners in the top six finishers. Rob Morrow won his fourth district individual championship, followed by Shea Salinas, Brad Maciulewicz and Chris Gormley. The other runners were Kevin Lopez, Matt Johnston and Dustin Cherry.

Grapevine's varsity girls also qualified for the regional meet and hope to produce a duplication of last year's run to the state meet. Mollye Stanford powered the way for the team's second place finish. Other great performances were turned in by Laura Harlett, Janet Alvarez, Kary Wagner, Catherine Meadows, Lia Solomon and Maryann Overby. Grapevine's Cross Country teams are coached by Jerry Carter.
