both high schools prepare for football playoffs

Both GHS and CHHS have earned spots in the UIL Football playoffs but exactly who the opposing teams are will be decided after Friday night’s final games of the regular season. Based on the results of Friday night’s games, GHS will play either Wichita Falls or Azle for the Division I, Bi-District title. That playoff match will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2 p.m. at Birdville Fine Arts Complex. CHHS will play either Marcus, McKinney, Creekview or R.L. Turner for the Division II, Bi-District title and that game will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 7:30 p.m. at Coppell High School stadium.

Parents As Teachers schedules events

The Parents As Teachers program has scheduled several events for November:

Nov. 13, 6-7:30 p.m. – Playtime
Nov. 13, 11:30 a.m. – Teen Luncheon
Nov. 27, 6-7:30 p.m. – Playtime

There will be no playtime during Thanksgiving Week.

Fifth-grader runs with flag as it passes through DFW

Andrew Ball, fifth grader at Grapevine Elementary School, had a once-in-a-lifetime experience when he carried the “Flag Across America” American flag for a half mile during its pass through the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Andrew’s father is a member of a Grapevine runners group, which was participating in the event in Irving, as the flag was being taken to American Airlines for a ceremony. The “Flag Across America” left Boston’s Logan Airport on Sept. 11 and is scheduled to arrive at Los Angeles LAX Airport on Nov. 11.

Administrative assistant named to professional post

Karen Coleman, administrative assistant to Kathryn Kee at GCISD, has been appointed to the Awards/Scholarships/Journalist Committee for the Texas Educational Secretaries Association (TESA) for a one-year term. Karen has served in a variety of positions with TESA, and over the last few years has been a much-requested presenter for members of the professional organization.

Video of GHS veteran’s celebration scheduled for school channel showings

Cable viewers who missed the Grapevine High School veteran’s celebration in October, will have the opportunity to see a video replay of the event on GCISD’s cable television channels. The show will begin at 5 p.m. and play throughout the night until approximately 10 a.m. the next day. For AT&T Broadband cable viewers in Grapevine, the program will be played on Channel 18, Wednesday, Nov. 14. For AT&T Broadband viewers in Colleyville and Euless, the program will play on Channel 74, Thursday, Nov. 14.

The event included the unveiling of the “Freedom Trail” in the school’s ecology center, a special tribute to survivors of the USS Indianapolis, which was sunk in the Philippine Sea during World War II and the high school graduation of two WWII veterans.

Teachers and staff invited to celebration for scholarship semifinalists

GCISD teachers and staff who have taught or worked with any of the district’s 15 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are invited to help the students celebrate their successes at a reception on Nov. 14, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Students will be honored at the Reception Hall of the Lancaster Theatre at the Palace Theatre, 300 South Main Street in Grapevine.

Board meeting locations changed

Construction in GCISD’s Board of Trustees meeting room makes it necessary to relocate the board’s next three meetings. Locations are as follows:

Study Session, Nov. 12, 6 p.m. – Grapevine Middle School Library
Regular Meeting, Nov. 26, 7 p.m. – Colleyville Heritage High Auditorium
Regular Meeting, Dec. 10, 6 p.m. – Grapevine High Library

Parents and employees invited to provide input during audit

A curriculum management audit will be conducted for GCISD during Nov. 26-29 and parents and employees have an opportunity to provide comments, supportive statements or express concerns to the audit team. This audit will serve as a diagnostic tool designed to help improve the quality of curriculum and instruction functions in the district. On Nov. 27, teachers and other district staff are invited to meet with the auditors between 4:30-5:30 p.m.; parents may meet with auditors between 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Interviews will be conducted in the Administration Building, 3050 Ira E. Woods Avenue, Grapevine. For more information, contact Public Information, 817/251-5505.

COLLEYVILLE ELEMENTARY hosts entertainer, writer

Willy Welch, a singer, songwriter, storyteller, actor, and author, will be at Colleyville Elementary School on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Welch will perform for the CES students at four different sessions: 8:30 a.m.- K-1st, 9:30 a.m.-2nd-3rd, 1 p.m.-4th, and 2 p.m.- 5th. His books include Playing Right Field, Dancing with Daddy, and Grumpy Bunnies. His recordings include “I Only Looked Away for a Minute,” “Playing Right Field and Other Songs for Big Kid,” “A Rainbow of Children’s Songs,” “Open Eyes, Open Hands, Open Heart,” “Welcome the Light,” and “A Prayer for the Journey.” 

His books and recordings will be sold at the Colleyville Elementary School Scholastic Book Fair on December 3rd – 7th.

Bear essentials presented by CES students

Kindergarten students of Colleyville Elementary School will present their annual “Teddy Bears on Parade” on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 8:15 a.m., featuring “floats” built by the students. Bears will ride in the student-made floats as the rest of the students line the hallways to watch the parade.

Dove Elementary Calendar of Events

Nov. 12 - grades K-2 are having an environmental program in the cafeteria given by the City of Grapevine. 

Nov. 13 - Dine out at Red Robin on William. D. Tate and Red Robin will donate 15% of the bill to the school if diners mention Dove Elementary!

Nov. 13 - Dove Elementary School is celebrating meeting sales goals by having a Mega- Event in the gym. This event is for all Dove Elementary School students and includes a rock climbing wall, a jump house, and many activities for the children.

Nov. 15 - November PTA meeting, 6:45 p.m.,cafeteria. First grade students will perform a variety of plays and fables.

Nov. 16 - Students are encouraged to wear their pajamas for “Be Thankful you are in your PJ'S Day.”

Nov. 27 – Dove night at CiCi's Pizza on Park Blvd. Mention Dove and CiCi's will contribute a portion of their sales to Dove Elementary School.

Nov. 29 - Ice Cream with the Principal at 1:45 p.m. Students selected by their teachers as Dynamic Dolphins will get to come to the cafeteria and eat ice cream with Principal Debra Lewis.

Glenhope Elementary

Glenhope Elementary will celebrate Veteran's Day with a Heritage Day celebration on Friday, Nov. 16. The theme for the day is "American Pride."

Children will invite their parents, grandparents and others close to them to share their personal experiences of American pride. In addition, children will sing patriotic songs at the Heritage Day assembly followed by a panel discussion with community members from our various armed forces during different war campaigns such as WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. Assembly times are K-2 at 8:30-9 a.m; 3-5 at 9:15 a.m.; and a reception at 10 a.m.

Glenhope Elementary's Scholastic Book Fair 

Glenhope Elementary's Scholastic Book Fair will be held Nov. 12-16. Hours are: Monday-Wednesday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursday 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Friday 8 a.m.-noon.

Glenhope Elementary receives blue ribbon award

Glenhope Elementary representatives Wynette Griffin, principal, and Anne Horton, assistant principal recently went to Washington D.C. to accept the school’s Blue Ribbon Award from the US Department of Education. Also attending were the two staff members responsible for collecting information and writing the Blue Ribbon application: Jo Shaffer, art teacher, and Lisa Dunn, now assistant principal at Silver Lake Elementary. The award plaque is displayed in the school's hallway.

Grapevine Elementary Calendar of Events

  • GES CiCi's Pizza Night will be held Nov. 15 at the CiCis' in Grapevine on Park Street.
  • GES Heritage Day activities will begin at 8:30 on Nov. 16th.  Grandparents are welcome. There will be a performance by all classes in the cafeteria, then the grandparents will go to the individual class rooms. A parade will finalize day.
  • Kindergarten students will have their Thanksgiving Feast on Nov.16th after the school program. Weather permitting, it will be held at the park.
  • Picture retakes and activity pictures will be Nov. 28th.
  • GES Spirit Day will be Nov. 30th. Students should wear school shirts and show school spirit.
  • The GES choir will sing at the Grapevine Tree Lighting on Dec. 3rd, at the gazebo on Main Street. The event begins at 7 p.m. 
  • GES choir program will perform "Our House is a Holiday House," on Dec 12 and 13 at 8:30 a.m. and Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

Cross Timbers Middle

Thirty-seven Cross Timbers musicians were selected as members of the GCISD district band and will perform at the All-district concert on Nov. 13th, 7:30 p.m. in the GHS auditorium. (Listed below with chair number beside name) Jolette Wine is the Cross Timbers Middle School band director.

Cross Timbers Middle School

Cross Timbers Middle School’s Math/Science team had an outstanding showing on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Austin Academy Math and Science tournament and CTMS student Eric Chang was the top 6th grade student out of 31 schools represented.

The 6th graders took the 3rd place team award in Number Sense and took the 2nd place team awards for both math and science. They consistently took the 3rd place sweepstakes award. The 7th graders took the 1st place science team award. The 8th graders took the 2nd place science team award and 4th place in overall sweepstakes.

The next competition for the Math/Science team is Nov. 17th when the team will travel to Valley View High School. Cross Timbers is hosting two tournaments this year, the first on Dec.1 and a regional qualifier on March 2. The Math/Science team is coached by Ruthanne Bloyd and Eileen Dinneen.

Colleyville Heritage High

Young soccer players in grades kindergarten through six are invited to polish up their skills at a soccer techniques camp On Dec. 15, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., sponsored by the nationally ranked CHHS varsity girls soccer team and the varsity boys soccer team. The cost is $32 and includes a camp t-shirt, pizza lunch and soda. Registration must be received by Dec. 1 in order to receive a t-shirt. Late registration is $36. Players in grades K-5 will work with varsity team members and players in grade 6 will work with Lincoln Hunt, CHHS girls soccer coach. Each player should come appropriately dressed for the day’s weather, with necessary soccer gear: shin guards, shoes, ball and water bottle. Registration forms are available at the GCISD Administration building and at CHHS.

Colleyville Heritage Panther Band Drumline

Colleyville Heritage Panther Band Drumline will be performing a fundraising event at Fuddrucker's Restaurant at Grapevine Mills, Wednesday, Dec. 12, from 5:30-9 p.m. Drum fans and community members are invited to show support by eating at Fuddruckers that night.

CHHS Pantera dinner/auction 

CHHS Pantera dinner/auction is Saturday at CHHS from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $7. Barbeque dinner will be served and the Panteras will perform throughout the evening. Auction items total $20,000 and include 6-week old Australian Shepherd/chow mix puppy, a day of beauty at Synergist’s Spa, Bass Hall tickets and a night at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel, Star Hockey tickets, Cowboy’s Thanksgiving Day tickets with a parking pass and Mind, Body & Soul signed by Troy Aikman, Texas Rangers ’96 League Championship autographed baseball signed by the ’96 league champs in a protective case, Joe Nieuwendyk’s hockey stick and puck signed, a Dallas Star’s sweatshirt and cap, and the GHS vs. CHHS 2001 game football signed.

Grapevine High

Grapevine High School theatre will present “The Apple Tree” on Nov. 8 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Madeleine Hemley Auditorium. All seats are $5 in advance and $7 at the door or may be reserved at 817/251-5279. With lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and Music by Jerry Bock, the musical is a collection of three short plays with a uniting theme of forbidden fruit. The first act, The Diary of Adam and Eve, is Mark Twain's look at marriage...in the beginning. Act II is a retelling of the Lady and the Tiger, as Barbara must choose the fate of her lover by Frank R. Stockton. 

The final act is a twist on Cinderella meets Hollywood, in Passionella by Jules Feiffer which tells of the transformation of Ella the chimney sweep to Passionella, the movie star.

This performance will be featured as one of seven main stage shows at The Texas Theatrefest for High School Thespians, Nov. 15 in Wichita Falls.

Eight journalism students from Grapevine High School win awards

Eight journalism students from Grapevine High School won awards at the Texas Association of Journalism Educators' "Fall Fiesta," Oct. 27-29 in San Antonio. The students competed with students from throughout the state in writing, design and photography contests.

Receiving superior ratings for their work were junior Dennis Provost for editorial cartooning; and seniors Liz Martin and Lance Marshall for entries in the color print competition. Martin's award was in the convention category, and Marshall's in the people category.

Senior Kelly Grace and junior Adam Groffman won an award of excellence for their yearbook theme package. They competed as a team to create designs and copy for a specified theme. Martin also won an award of excellence, in the architecture category of the color print competition.

Receiving honorable mention for their work were junior Sritha Reddy in advanced yearbook design; junior Sheena Martin in sports writing; Liz Martin in the open, people and action categories of the color print competition; Marshall in the "Taste of San Antonio" category of the color print competition; and senior Shannon Asimus in the open category of the color print competition. Julia Copeland is the GHS journalism teacher.

Grapevine High School's boys track 

Grapevine High School's boys track team won its third straight regional championship on Nov. 3rd in Lubbock. Rob Morrow won his second straight individual championship. Also doing a terrific job were Shea Salinas, Brad Maciulewicz, Chris Gormley, Kevin Lopez, Michael Jennings and Matt Johnston. The team will compete for the state title Saturday, Nov. 10th,10:20 a.m. in Old Settler's Park near Round Rock. Directions: Take I-35 South to Round Rock and Exit to Hwy 79 (Exit 253) and turn left. Go down Hwy 79 toward Taylor. You will turn left at the new Dell Stadium (that is the entrance to the park.

Great American Smoke Out

Grapevine High School will be participating in the Great American Smoke Out week on Nov. 12 -16. GHS Student Council members, who sponsor the event, anticipate enthusiasm and support for the event, based on the response in previous years. 

On Monday, students will decorate the halls with the themes for the week. The themes are as follows:

Tuesday – photos posted of groups of students with a sign that says, “One person missing from one of these pictures is one too many! Don’t Smoke.”

Wednesday - smoking fact sheets posted around campus

Thursday - smoking prevention stickers distributed

Friday - smoking prevention bookmarks given to students

GHS’s Student Council vice president Meagan Wilson said, “Great American Smoke Out week is always something that our whole student body gets involved in. Loren Fowler, Student Council Historian commented, “It really hits home for a lot of students and I think that compels them to participate. We are especially excited about posting student pictures to get them to really think. It is a new project we are trying this year and think it will have a good response!”
