GCISD Celebrates Opening of New Grapevine Middle School

School administrators, parents and students came together last night to officially open the new Grapevine Middle School campus.  The facility, located at 301 Pony Parkway in north Grapevine, replaces the former school that had been in use as a high school or middle school since 1952.  The old building on Worth Street in Grapevine originally served as the Grapevine High School. It became the Grapevine Junior High and later Grapevine Middle School when the new facility on Mustang Drive was built in 1969.  The old GMS facility has been leased and is being operated by Faith Christian School, formerly located in Colleyville.

Principal Steve Trachier opened the ceremonies held in the gymnasium and welcomed a crowd of students, teachers, parents and residents. He recognized the current school board, as well as former board members present, and introduced the new superintendent, Dr. Kevin Singer.  Tom Walker, former principal of Grapevine Middle School for many years, was also introduced.  Walker began teaching and coaching in the GCISD in 1959 and served as the first principal of both Grapevine Middle School and Colleyville Middle School.  The athletic field at the new school is named after him.  Trachier commented that his wife, as well as the wife of the vice-principal, were former GMS students, as were many in the audience.

Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate, also a former student, presented a proclamation to the school on behalf of the city.  Mark Born, GCISD Board of Trustees President, spoke to the crowd, as did his daughter, Julie Born, a GMS 7th grader.  Born commended the students, teachers and parents for their perseverance in working for the creation of the new facility.  It was a group of parents that initiated the dialogue that resulted in the decision to build the new school.  The GMS cheerleaders performed and presented the board members with gifts.  The ribbon cutting was conducted following the showing of a commemorative video prepared by the GCISD Public Information Department.

Refreshments were served in the cafeteria and tours of the new facility were taken following the opening ceremonies.
