Dateline GCISD: September 28, 2001 Cannon Elementary Love and Logic Parent classes continue at Cannon Elementary on Monday, Oct. 1 with Lesson 3 – Ownership of the Problem. Lesson 4 - Opportunity for Thinking/Decision Making will follow on Monday, Oct. 15 and Lesson 5 – Let Consequences Do the Teaching will be held on Monday, Oct. 22. Times for all sessions are 8:15-9:45 a.m. or 6-7:30 p.m. Child care is available but registration is required. For more information, call the school at 817/251-5680. Colleyville Elementary Musical Tribute to Texas: Fourth graders at Colleyville Elementary School will present a musical tribute to Texas on Thursday, Oct. 18, 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Celebrating the history and culture of Texas, the program will include “Yellow Rose of Texas,” “Texas, Our Texas,” “Don Alfonzo,” and other selected songs about Texas. Students will perform traditional folk style dances with accompaniment being provided by classmates on Orff instruments. EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING: The executive board of the Colleyville Elementary School PTA will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 9:30 in the school cafeteria. CAMPUS EXCELLENCE COMMITTEE: Colleyville Elementary Campus Excellence Committee will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 4 p.m. in the media center. Parents should notify the school office of topics for the open forum. Glenhope Elementary Students, staff and parents of Glenhope Elementary came together last week to show their patriotism and pride in America following the tragedies in New York and Washington D.C. On Friday, everyone gathered for a “Stand Up for America” rally that included patriotic songs by members of the Colleyville Heritage High School choir, a presentation by the Glenhope Talk Hands sign language group, and a lesson in pride and patriotism by John Grace, who served in the Army and National Guard for 14 years. Also on Friday, at the students’ request, a bake sale was held and by the end of the day $1175.24 had been raised for victims. The students now are raising money by collecting coins. All money from both fund raisers will be sent to the Red Cross. Heritage Elementary Heritage Elementary School will host 3rd Grade Family Math Night on Thursday, Oct. 11th, 6:30 – 8 p.m. During Family Math Night, third grade students and their parents participate in exciting and entertaining math games that focus on problem solving. The teachers use this event to explain problem-solving strategies and they share games to be played at home to help reinforce mathematical skills. The goal is that students and parents alike enjoy learning the math games and leave thinking that math isn't so bad after all. Heritage Elementary School's annual fall festival is planned for Saturday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., and the campus will be transformed into a carnival for young and old alike. This year’s them is "Celebrating Our Heritage...Heritage Hullabaloo!, " a theme that was created by Kailey Sweet, HES third grader. The festival includes fun games, cool prizes, and fabulous food, as well as a pumpkin patch selling not only pumpkins but also festive wreaths and scarecrows. The ever-popular "Velcro Wall,” an event where people dress in a special suit and jump up to stick to a velcro wall, is sure to attract attention. There will also be face painting, an extravagant cake walk, train rides and more. Colleyville Middle School Colleyville Middle School PTA will hold a general meeting on Oct. 9, 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. The program will be an overview of the "Aim for Success" and "Teen Aid" programs. An October social will be held for students at Colleyville Middle on Oct. 26. Sixth grade students will attend from 6:-7:30 p.m., with seventh and eighth grade students following from 8-10 p.m. Admission is $4 with student ID. Costumes are encouraged but must follow the district’s dress code policy and students are invited to bring a canned food item to donate to G.R.A.C.E. Cross Timbers Middle Cross Timbers Middle’s 2000-2001 Den yearbook staff for receiving the UIL Distinguished Merit Award. This award recognizes the 2001: A Wolf Odyssey as "among the best in Texas." The staff earned the highest rankings for their efforts in the following categories: Unifying Concepts, Reader Services, Writing, Headlines, People, and Electives Coverage, Photography, Captions, Graphics, Student Life, and Sports sections earned the Achievement Award. Rebecca Wernicke's dance pages were deemed an "excellent spread" by the judges. Kudos of excellence went to Travis McCann for his photograph of Austin Weir. The eighth grade farewell page, written by Candace Gonzales and Casey Jones, also received high praise. Perhaps the most meaningful comment from a judge pointed our that "the theme shows pride and enthusiasm for your school, and that the readers are well-served." Grapevine Middle Grapevine Middle School sixth grade students on the Red Riders team got together to construct an American flag of red, white and blue cups on the fence in front of their campus. Social studies teacher Debbie Hoskins sponsored the project, and the sixth grade students worked out the design and implemented the display. They enjoyed the opportunity to show their patriotism and hope that it will be enjoyed by all who enter the Grapevine Middle School campus. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, Colleyville Heritage High School sophomores, all juniors, and freshmen PAP students who have registered with their counselor will take the PSAT. This very important test can determine whether certain juniors will be National Merit Finalist contenders, as well as providing practice opportunities for sophomores and freshman. Parents can help ensure success for their students by encouraging students to get a good night’s rest, proper nutrition and maintain a positive attitude about the test. All seniors and freshman students who are not taking the test do not need to report to school until 11:40. If, due to transportation requirements, students need to report to school but are not testing, they should go to the Panther Den with materials to study or work on independently until their 7th period class begins at 11:40. The school busses will be running on regular morning schedule. The regular schedule will resume at 11:40 with 7th and 8th period classes. Colleyville Heritage Panther Choir will host a Spaghetti Supper & Fall Concert on Oct. 9, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the school. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the CHHS Auditorium. Members of the Colleyville Heritage Panther Choir Department competed in the first round of auditions for the Texas All-State Choir on Saturday, Sept. 15th. Twenty-six members auditioned and 22 of those singers will advance to the second round of auditions on October 13th. Those advancing are Jenny Lyons, Deanna Barsallo, Robin Phillips, Colleen Fry, Natalie Berry, Amanda Saunders, Sara Schleimer, Jessica Elizondo, Catherine Shipman, Alyssia Birchard, Katy McCall, Tarin Nix, Katie Moore, Alex Francis, Erin Fitch, Jennifer Brown, Cecily Elliott, John Summers, Ted Dollar, David Smith, Ben Isham, Chris McCall, and Ben Nye. CHHS is pleased to announce the new Honor Council for the 2001-2002 school year. Seniors John Argenbright, Robyn Cox, and Rachel Williams, Juniors Katie Braden and Samantha Remier, sophomores Chase Martin and Marjon Rostami will lead this year's Council along with faculty members Don Dina and Chris Renshaw. Freshman representatives will be chosen in the spring semester. The purpose of the Council is to develop an academic code that promotes honorable responsibility. In addition, the Council investigates violations of the CHHS academic code. These students were selected by their peers as students who represent the high moral standards, academic standards, responsibility, honesty and integrity that is expected by the CHHS community. Grapevine High Grapevine High’s Theatre department has a full schedule of performances throughout the year with the first, the Moliere classic Tartuffe, opening Oct. 4 and running through Oct. 13. General seating advanced tickets are $4.50 per person and $5 at the door and reserved seating is available in advance for $5 per person and $6 at the door. This will be the first performance in the school’s newly renovated Madeleine Hemley Auditorium and all performances for the year will be held there. Grapevine High Theatre Department is looking for a few "helping hands." Parents and friends of theatre who would like to be involved should check the GHS website at www.gcisd-ghs.org and follow the “Highwired” link to the Drama site to see a list of ways to be involved. Patrons are also encouraged to purchase ads and have their contributions listed in the program for the 2001-2002 season. GHS debate student Orijit Ghoshal was top speaker and won the round robin at the Greenhill Lincoln Douglas Round Robin on Sept. 22. Debaters from debate powerhouse states of Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Alabama were invited to attend. Orijit also won the Greenhill LD Tournament where 118 debaters from sixteen states competed. Orijit only dropped three total ballots out of the ten rounds and twenty-three ballots at the tournament. The Grapevine High School Mustang Band is proud to announce that it will host a performance by the nationally renown “Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band” at the Grapevine High School varsity football game on Oct. 5. The O.U. Band, under the direction of Professor Brian Britt and Dr. Bill Wakefield, will perform at half time of the Grapevine vs. Lancaster game at Mustang Stadium. The 300 members of the Pride, representing virtually every major field of study at OU, performs for hundreds of thousands of football fans each fall at OU football games and all around the country. The band has received the Sudler Trophy in recognition of longtime outstanding achievement in the college marching band field. The Grapevine High School Mustang Band will perform their marching show after the football game, at a special post game performance. Tickets for the game will be available at the GCISD Athletic Ticket Office and at Grapevine High School. |
