An Update from the City of Southlake |
|
Dateline: September 13, 2001 1:09 PM an update from the city of southlake The City of Southlake is responding to the tragic events of Tuesday, Sept. 11, through the following actions. * By order of the Mayor and City Manager, United States and Texas flags at all city buildings have been lowered to half staff and will remain in that position throughout this national period of mourning. * A Southlake resident donated 50 United States flags, which city crews have placed along the streets in Southlake Town Square and along the Southlake Boulevard right-of-way. All Southlake residents are encouraged to present similar demonstrations of national unity. * NEW On Thursday afternoon, a banner provided by the Greater Southlake Women's Society and Fast Signs will be hung at Family Park Pavilion in Southlake Town Square. It will remain throughout the weekend. Mental health experts have said that writing one's feelings during a time of trauma can be valuable, especially for children. Residents are invited to come sign the banner and include a note expressing their thoughts during this time. The banner will be delivered to a New York relief organization next week. * NEW Also on Thursday afternoon, students from Carroll High School will be hanging red white and blue ribbons on trees at Southlake Town Square. * An additional fire engine team has been activated. This team will be available to assist if needed at D/FW Airport, and would leave a second crew in Southlake to provide fire protection for local residents and businesses. * Additional police officers have been placed on patrol to increase the police presence in the community. * All public meetings scheduled for Tuesday evening were cancelled, including the City Council Work Session and the Southlake Drug and Alcohol Awareness Committee meeting. In recognition of the example set by President George W. Bush and the U.S. Congress, meetings scheduled for Wednesday evening and beyond are being held as scheduled. * Southlake public safety officials have been in contact with neighboring communities and D/FW Airport to coordinate any possible emergency response. It is important to note, however, that at this time there is no reason to believe that the day's events will extend to Southlake or surrounding areas. * White's Chapel United Methodist Church has scheduled an emergency blood drive to be held Thursday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church, White Chapel Boulevard just south of Southlake Boulevard. All donors are welcome. * Greater Southlake Women's Society has scheduled an emergency blood drive to be held Friday, Sept. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Southlake Senior Activity Center, 307 Parkwood Drive. All donors are welcome. To volunteer to help with the drive, please call Lynn Flaherty at (817) 329-9661. * Anyone wanting to donate blood at other times should contact Carter Blood Care at its Bedford office, 1805 W. Airport Freeway. Please call (817) 283-4787 in advance to ensure that technicians will be available when you arrive. The Southlake Department of Public Safety has released the following statement: "The entire Southlake Department of Public Safety is deeply saddened by today's tragic and shocking events. As members of the nation's Police and Fire service, we stand ready to offer our full support to the public safety agencies of New York, Washington, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania in response to today's tragic and shocking events. Our sympathy and prayers are with the victims, their families and our entire nation, which shares their grief." "We have highly sophisticated response protocols for dealing with such incidents when they occur. But, as with all fire and rescue services across the nation, we have developed these protocols and trained in the hope that our skills in responding to such tragedies would never be required. We remain committed to working with all appropriate agencies, national and international, to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of Southlake and all Americans. We are still obtaining information at this time and are assessing the situation as we speak. We will advise you as soon as we are aware of additional information which might be of interest to the city of Southlake." Many municipal employees have family living and working in New York City, or working for American and United airlines. We also recognize that the same is true for many Southlake residents. The City of Southlake is committed to maintaining service for its residents during this emotional time. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated. James Kunke HAVE
