students respond to tragedy with outpouring of generosity

Students in GCISD schools have created their own ways to "do something" in response to the devastating events of Sept. 11. Ideas have come from the students themselves, even in the elementary schools, and students are enthusiastic about having a way to show support for their country, as well as a way to help the victims and families.

At Colleyville Middle School, the announcement was made yesterday that the rest of the week would be a "Spirit of America" celebration with an opportunity for students to donate money to the American Red Cross and their relief efforts. Today before lunch was over, $1500 had been collected. The students and staff are wearing red, white and blue this week and on Friday at 2:30 p.m. on the school's athletic field, they will participate in a "Spirit of America" pep rally complete with patriotic music performed by the band, a balloon release and the announcement of the grand total students raised for the Red Cross.

Some of the activities at other schools include:  a money chain of donations at Colleyville Heritage High School, where the theme is "Everybody is linked together in this tragedy," and the spirit of giving is spurring students to donate to the Red Cross.

Cannon Elementary students are collecting money for the Red Cross in a five-gallon water bottle and with the theme "Coins for Coping with Crisis," are encouraging students to bring their pennies, nickels and dimes to help.

Dove Elementary has designated Friday as "Red, White and Blue Day."

At Glenhope, a group of third graders are attempting to organize a bake sale for Friday.

Cross Timbers' student council is also organizing a Red Cross fund-raiser.
