Dateline: Colleyville - October 21, 2001 1:46 AM

On Thursday, October 18, 2001, Payton Wright Ford donated a Ford Explorer Sport to one of Colleyville Police Department's Resource Officers.

Chief Young, John Brown, and Corporal Moore

This all started when some of the parents were speaking with Corporal Gary Moore, Resource officer for Colleyville Heritage High School.  They knew about his 1989 vehicle and wanted to know what they could do to help.  One of the parents decided to do what several other cities have done in the past and approach a local dealership.  Then a retired Colleyville Police Officer who now works at Payton Wright ran into Corporal Moore one day at lunch.  The subject was brought up and the gentleman decided to check into himself.  About 45 minutes later Corporal Moore received a phone call that said it was a done deal  It was then presented to the Chief and the Chief presented it to City Council where it was approved.  The gentleman that assisted was actually Corporal Moore's training officer about 13 years ago.

The Explorer Sport will be used for the school resource officer for patrolling the school in the parking lot and to provide a presence at the school that will let the students know that the police department is there for them.

Chief Moore explained that Corporal Moore had a 1989 vehicle that had been seized several years ago.  The vehicle has very high mileage and was starting to become problematic for the department.  He stated, "This provides us an addition to our fleet with very minimum cost to us."

Mr. Brown presents the keys to Corporal Moore

There are two other resource officers that work at the schools that are in similar circumstances.  One of the officers has an old investigators car and one has an old police car that has been taken out of the fleet.

Next year the budget will replace two vehicles in the fleet.  Those vehicles will be moved down in the fleet and will probably replace the vehicles that the other school resource officers currently use. They will be newer than what the officers have now but they will not be new vehicles.

Corporal Moore stated, "I think this is great.  Some of the parents at the school brought this up.  They wanted to help."

Mr. Brown stated, "We are not just selling and servicing cars, we are providing a service for our community.  To have representation with a guy like Gary in the schools where we can help the young people of our community, that is why we decided to do this." He continued, "We are doing this because it is the right thing to do and not just for advertising."

This is the first time that Payton Wright Ford has given a vehicle to a police department but not the first time for them to assist in the community.  Following is a short list of things they have done to support the community.

  • $2,500 music scholarships to Grapevine High School, Colleyville Heritage High School and Southlake High School
  • $1,000 athletic scholarship to Grapevine High School.
  • $5,000 to Grapevine Athletic Booster Club for their trip to the Alamo Dome football tournament.
  • $3,500 to the Texas Gauchos, a non profit organization that supports summer athletics so that some young talent that might not otherwise be noticed by colleges will have an opportunity to show their talent.
  • They also support Grapefest, Main Street Days and many other local events.

Also, in October they will be sponsoring Women's Wellness along with Tom Thumb where they will be giving away a 2002 Ford Focus in conjunction with mammogram testing.  If a woman provides proof she has recently had a mammogram she can register to win the car.
