The
Grapevine High School Ex-Student Association introduced the 2001
Hall of Fame inductees at a reception Friday, October 19, at the
GHS library. Principal
Dana Drew welcomed the guests and Russell Kidd introduced the
program. Members of
the GHS Student Council also participated in the event.
Hall
of Fame inductees included former GHS students Shirley Cannon
Holley and David Lancaster. Cannon
spent her entire undergraduate years in the GCISD, and was
Salutatorian of the 1951 graduating class.
Cannon Elementary is named in honor of her father, W. F.
Cannon, former superintendent of GCISD schools.
She resides in Trophy Club with her husband, Cyrus, and is
active in many Grapevine civic and cultural activities.
David
Lancaster attended elementary school and high school in Grapevine.
He attended St. Marks School in Dallas during the middle
school years. After
attending SMU David moved to New York to pursue an acting career
and eventually a career on Wall Street.
Combining his acting and investment interests led David to
Hollywood, where now after fifteen years and sixteen films, he
resides in Los Angeles with his wife and son.
Lancaster is the son of Drs. Ed and Minnie Lee Lancaster of
Grapevine.
Distinguished
Faculty Members honored at the reception were Annie B. Watters and
Harlan L. Jewett. Mrs.
Watters’ 67 years in education touched the lives of countless
GCISD school children and was evident by the many memories shared
during the morning. Both of her children were GHS graduates and she currently has
grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the school system.
Three decades of her teaching career were spent in
Grapevine. Harlan
Jewett also spent three decades teaching Industrial Arts in
Grapevine schools. He
taught at all school levels, elementary through high school, and
helped with the planning and opening of both the current Grapevine
High School and Colleyville Middle School.
Mr. Jewett brought the old teacher’s mailbox from the
original Grapevine High School to the reception and presented it
to a former student. He
had saved it along with other mementos when the high school was
moved in the fall of 1969.
Also
recognized at the reception were the members of the 1951, 1952 and
1953 District Championship football teams.
Members of the cheerleading squads, the Lady Mustang
Volleyball Team of 1952 and the 2001 Coming Home Queens were
introduced as well.
The
GHS Ex-Student Association sponsors events during Homecoming each
year, including the Hall of Fame ceremonies, the ex-students
banquet, and participates in the parade.
