COLLEYVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT LOOKING FORWARD TO NEW HOME…by Kimberly Connor The cramped and outdated facilities currently used by the Colleyville Police Department were once home to the City Hall and Fire Department as well. Over the years the other departments have moved out to newer locations, and soon the police will be relocating to their new home being built next to the Colleyville Community Center on Bluebonnet Drive.
In 1999, Colleyville citizens approved a ½ percent sales tax, which is being collected for the financing of the new Justice Center. The groundbreaking was held on April 12, 2001 and construction began later that month. Some thought that day would never come. The land for the Justice Center was purchased for $660,000 from Patsy Smith. Prior to his death, Herman Smith and his wife Patsy had donated two acres to the City of Colleyville to provide a site for the Colleyville Community Center. The new Justice Center will incorporate AN open reception area with convenient access to services most often used by citizens. The center will provide the police department with a much larger communications area, and additional storage for evidence. An armory, a briefing room and a locker room with a workout area will also be included. In addition to the larger jail, an enclosed “Sally Port” will enable officers to transfer prisoners from their vehicles to the jail in a secured area. Several rooms have been designed to provide for multiple uses. A police training room will double as the city’s Emergency Operations Center, or “EOC”, for use in case of a disaster or other major incident. The courtroom will be relocated from the current City Hall to the new Justice Center, and will be available for community use when not in use by the court. A construction contract in the amount of $5,564,000 was awarded to CMPA Inc. of Grapevine. The facility should be completed during the summer of 2002. Police Chief John Young stated that he is working closely with the City Council to make sure the construction of the new Center goes as smoothly as possible. “We are very excited about the new center,” stated Chief Young.
One Colleyville citizen recently remarked, “I’m glad to see they are finally getting what they deserve. They work hard for our community and shouldn’t have to work under their current conditions.” Photos
