COLLEYVILLE
WOMAN'S CLUB 17TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY HOME TOUR
The Colleyville Woman's
Club held their annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, December 2,
2001. There were five homes on this year's tour ranging from
"A Gothic Fairy Tale Christmas" to "A Holiday
Classic".
| The
first home on the tour this year was Scott and Susie Simmons home
located in Southlake. The home was sponsored by Kathy and
John Hornbach and The Wellness Opportunities Group -
Mid-Cities.
Designed by Scott
- the owner, as well as the architect of Estate Homes - this was a
labor of love and detail. You can visit their website at www.simmonsestatehomes.com.
Immediately, you're impressed with
soaring spaces, dramatic lighting and hand-troweled walls. A
domed rotunda with an elegant Christmas tree offers views to
many of the family's favorite rooms. Over the family
room are custom-guilt niches with two Gothic window frames from an
old English church. |

The
formal living area offers more than beautiful woodwork. It
offers intrigue with a swing away bookcase beside the fireplace
that reveals a secret passage into a turret office.
The
Master Suite, with it coffered ceiling and King Louis XIV replica
mantle, has an adjoining bath that features travertine tile with pewter
accents.
In
the family room, Gothic arches offer sanctuary to lion statues
above the massive fireplace mantle.
|
| Windows
arch up to offer unobstructed viewing of the pool area.
Behind you, a staircase awaits.
Three bedrooms and
a game/media room inhabit the top floor. One guestroom
features a lovely antique iron bed. Another houses an Angel
Village. Between the two is the game/media room, surrounded
by autographed memorabilia. Beyond is Olivia's room - where
painted clouds float above her Christmas tree. At the top of
the back stairs is a portrait of Scott and Olivia, painted
by Scott's mother.
Next to the Hearth
room, with its custom crest in the mantle, is the kitchen.
Outside, a long arcade waits to walk you to an outdoor living room
with a huge stone fireplace and built-in grill area. A
guesthouse sits beside the cabana. With a large arched door
that opens up to a full self-contained suite, guests will no doubt
be inviting themselves to come and stay awhile in this Gothic
fairy tale home. Click here for

The
second home on the tour belongs to Bradford Custom Homes. This
home was sponsored by Nancy Dennis and Keller Williams
Realty. (Please check back for photos on this home.)
Here,
Christmas past meets Christmas future. The Bradford
custom-designed home blends the warmth of tradition with the cool
technology of the future. Outwardly, its Old World Classic
architecture and Country French charm features a stucco exterior,
accentuated with stone and hand-hewn timber details.
A
wrought iron gate swings open to offer entry to a courtyard with a
vine-covered trellis. Immediately, you're greeted by a detached
"guest house" which doubles as the home office.
A
gourmet kitchen spans the back of the Great Room with a long granite bar
as a pass between the two rooms. A breakfast nook adjoins the
kitchen and offers a view of the outdoor fireplace on the back
veranda.
The
master suite rests on the back of the house. A comfy sitting area,
spacious bath, and large wardrobe area are just a few of the indulgences
you'll find. Two more bedroom suites, each with their own bath
offer extra room for family or guests.
What
you can't see in this home is also amazing. David Yates, host of
the WBAP Home Show, working with The Department of Energy, the
Environmental Protection Agency, and Bradford Custom Homes, presents the
mode of energy efficiency in new homebuilding. Together with
CompUSA, Amana Air Conditioning, Louisiana Pacific Corp. and a host of
other manufacturers, the home has been outfitted to display cutting-edge
products and building techniques in energy efficiency, home automation,
and low-maintenance living. The Gallery Furniture and Interior
Design Studio provided the home's furniture and accessories, which
reflect the casual elegance of the home. Decorative painting and
specially-commissioned paintings accent the interior.
This
new 4,000 square foot home will serve as a venue throughout the first
half of 2002 for the Colleyville Woman's Club, and will feature exciting
seminars, charity events and more.
| Larry
and Connie Stewart's home was the third stop on the tour and was sponsored by Landmark Bank and
Colleyville - Mid Cities - Mira Vista. Larry is also a
builder, you can visit their website at www.stewarthomes.com.
You immediately noticed the crisp, formal feel - the cream-colored
marble fireplace and a variety of tassels in rich reds and greens
are a perfect backdrop for the beautiful Christmas
decorations. Tucked underneath the winding staircase is a
player baby grand piano, entertaining guests with a selection of
holiday tunes.
|

|
|
The
living area features soaring windows that provide
a view into the pool area with its rock waterfall. An opera
box balcony overlooks this area and provides an opportunity to see
the ornate moldings up close. |
 |
In
the Master, the fireplace, painted scrollwork and the large curve
of room-tall windows create a cozy atmosphere. In the Master
bath, the holiday spirit continues with decorations accenting the
Jacuzzi tub and glass-walled shower.
The
kitchen cabinetry features carved-grape trim and you'll see the
grape theme throughout this room. Two chairs in the
adjoining family room were acquired from the old Fort Worth
courthouse.
In
the hallway to the guest room, hand-painted murals on both sides
and a vine-covered arbor overhead give the feeling of taking a
walk in the countryside. At the end of that stroll, the
downstairs guest rooms is decorated for the holidays with carousel
horses. The hallway to the guest bath is a gallery of family
portraits, going back several generations.
|
| Just
beyond the kitchen door is a charming two-room apartment.
This space is very feminine, decorated in florals, with
collections of angels and teapots. A twinkling Christmas
tree completes the picture. Upstairs is the domain of the
Stewarts' sons, and the layout includes their bedrooms, and
exercise room and the game room. The gameroom itself has a
beadboard ceiling and taupe paint-ragged walls. The pool
table and adjoining movie room provide a great place to gather in
this home designed for family and friends to enjoy. French
doors open into the game room, where friends are always
welcome. Click here

The
Impressionist Holiday was the fourth stop on the tour.
Christy's Decor Interior Design sponsored this home which is owned
by Barry and Christy Martines. The home appears as a
painting with its stone bridge entrance, stained-glass windows and
Gothic front door designed by Christy. For nearly two years,
Christy researched and wrangled the talents of various dealers and
craftsmen from around the world. Fueled by her passion, she
was able to bring her love of art history home.
A varied color
palette is used as a backdrop for an |
| impressive
art collection. Not only are there many original paintings
in the home, but there are dramatic reproduction paintings from
floor to ceiling throughout - thanks to artists Cissie Bragan and
Karen Ducker. |
|
Fascinating
details, such as an original Louis XVI chandelier in the dining
room, a replica of a Commodore Vanderbilt ceiling fan in Barry's
office just like the one at the Biltmore Mansion, and several
famous replica fireplace mantels add interest and warmth
throughout the home. Also, don't forget to look up in each
room - many contain hand-painted ceiling murals.
The master suite
overlooks the pools and offers angels for the holidays.
Here, you'll see an original Mary Cassatt watercolor, and one of
the many paintings throughout the home by Santa Fe impressionist
Deborah Gold.
|

|
|
Upstairs
is Christy's "childhood" bedroom. All the dolls
were made by her mother, June Drew, and close friend, Debra
Spisak. To your left is a game room done in turn of the
century holiday decor with a complete Charles Dickens village
collection. Yet another guestroom beckons with hand-painted
accents and a unique bed frame made from Civil War era iron
fencing. And don't forget to look in the cinema room
that features a 100-inch screen.
|
|

|
The
family room, down the back stairs, is home to their Winter
Wonderland Christmas tree. It offers a view into the
spacious kitchen, which has an entertaining pot rack and mural
dedication to Thomas Jefferson, the father of food.
Perhaps
the most interesting of all is a single crystal doorknob.
Look for it on the master suite door. Following Southern
Plantation era tradition, it was put there to symbolize the house
is all theirs. In more ways than one. Click
here for additional photos.
|
| The
final home on the tour was "Merry Mediterranean" owned
by Steve and Karen Starnes and sponsored by Chris Minteer and
Keller Williams Realty. This Mediterranean-style villa has a
comfortable, inviting atmosphere which is evident as soon as you
enter. Themed Christmas trees and abundantly decorated
wreaths add a festive feeling throughout. The Library makes
a warm backdrop for Karen's large Sow Village collection, and the
beautiful travertine staircase is elegantly decorated.
In the Master
Suite, comfort rules. Warm taupe walls, |
 |
| carved
wood, a hideaway television above the fireplace, plus tall
windows yielding a glimpse of a secluded lagoon make this room an
ideal place to escape from everyday stress. The master bath
features clouds on the ceiling and a Jacuzzi tub any bath-lover
would covet. Bubble in the glass block windows add a perfect
finishing touch. |
 |
As
the Starnes' formal dining space, the Angel Room is home to a
charming glass-topped dining table with three cherubs forming the
pedestal. Look up at the ceiling and around the room to see
more angels and a formal-style Christmas tree.
The
upstairs game room is great fun, with its sports-themed Christmas
tree, game tables and fascinating sports memorabilia - including
classic Dallas Cowboy pieces, autographed seats from Arlington
Stadium, and a prized signed Tom Landry fedora.
As
you exit the game room, look out over the Great Room and
appreciate up close the cloud mural and animated holiday display
atop the "great wall." Down the hall, the
Patriotic Bedroom features a tree lit from top to bottom |
|
with
layers of red, white and blue. This room is home to various
bits of Americana, from the characters lining the bed to the
wreath on the wall.
At
the opposite end of the hall Jessica's room sparkles with its
candy-themed Christmas tree and twisted-post bed framing a petite
oval window. In Kristyn's Room, you'll find a charming
snowman tree. The wrought-iron bed has vines
"growing" up and around the top for a garden feeling.
Secluded
and private, the pool area is an oasis of lush, tropical
plants. Corkscrew columns support a vine-covered trellis
over the poolside bar and built-in grill, where the family gathers
often. Click
