Dateline Westlake, Texas ...December 10, 2001

The current method of public school finance is an issue of extreme significance to all school children, taxpayers and leaders in education.

The Joint Select Committee on School Finance will be in the area to seek input from the entire north Texas region.  Chairman Paul Sadler granted State Representative Vicki Truitt's request for a public hearing that will be held in Westlake, on Thursday, December 13, 2001, at the new Fidelity Investments corporate campus.  The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., and will last until all persons wanting to speak have been heard.  Fidelity’s auditorium seats approximately 300.

The Fidelity campus is located just south of SH 114, and
west of the Solana office complex.  Take the Precinct Line Road exit from SH 114, and look for the Fidelity complex, northwest of the intersection of Precinct Line and Dove Road.

The Select Committee on School Finance, appointed by Lt. Governor Bill Ratliff and Texas House Speaker, Pete Laney, is comprised of six Texas Senators, six members of the Texas House of Representatives, and six members from the public-at-large.  These are the policy makers who will draft the future of public school finance in Texas.

The Committee split into half, with half assigned to attend public hearings for the western portion of the state, and half assigned to elicit public input from the eastern portion of the state.

Only six of these public hearings are being held statewide (Amarillo, El Paso, Brownsville, Galveston, Carlisle in east Texas, and Westlake). Representative Truitt said, "We are very fortunate to have been selected to host one of these important meetings.  Good representation and attendance from our area residents are essential."

Truitt continued, "This is a one of a kind opportunity to tell the architects of school finance why and how the current method for school finance should be changed.  Please plan to attend and share your view with the committee.  And, encourage others to attend.  The committee will want to hear from a good cross-section of the public and not just elected officials and school representatives  but taxpayers, as well.

I am honored to be of service to the people of the 98th Texas House District.  Facilitating this meeting is a unique opportunity to allow the people I serve to have a voice with the people who will craft key changes in public school finance."
