IS THERE BLACK MOLD AT CITY HALL?

Kimberly Connor, Editor
April 27, 2001

Local News Only.com (LNO) has learned that a city employee has expressed concern about the potential of black mold in the portable city buildings. Kelly Cooper, Human Resources for the City of Colleyville, acknowledged an employee had filed a written inquiry and request for attention to the matter. LNO obtained a copy of the e-mail, under the Open Records Act, indicating on April 5, 2001 the city employee expressed concern about black mold. In part the memo says that "black mold shown on television looks just like the mold around the air vents……outside walls are deteriorated …paint does not adhere to the partition near the ceiling outside the rest rooms due to mold. These buildings were never designed to be used as long as they have been". Photos from outside the buildings, click on photo to enlarge.

Through the Open Records Act LNO has obtained documents including an e-mail, sent to city council members after LNO began making inquires.  The memo dated April 25, 2001, from Interim City Manager Dianne McWethy, stated in part, "On the basis that an employee expressed concern related to the potential of a hazardous condition being located in the modular buildings, I wanted to let you know that we have been researching this matter in the most prompt and judicious manner."

Also obtained was a memo on April 17, 2001 from Kelly Cooper to Ms. McWethy with the subject matter "Black Mold".

The document released to LNO was substantially redacted by the City Attorney.  All attempts to contact Dianne McWethy for comments or explanation on the reason necessary to redact this information from the public were not successful before this posting.

LNO was informed that the City of Colleyville, at present, has no policy concerning black mold or procedures in place.
