Ecology Group Plans Veterans Tribute
Ecology
students at Grapevine High school will host a star-spangled
celebration of veterans on Oct. 16 that will feature a brunch at
10 a.m, the unveiling of the “Freedom Trail” in the school’s
ecocenter at 11 a.m., and at 12:15 p.m., a special tribute to
survivors of the USS Indianapolis, which was sunk in the
Philippine Sea during World War II. This is the second year that
the Ecology Club has honored veterans with a special event. Last
year, students celebrated the dedication of the Veteran’s
Memorial Garden.

WAR II VETERANS MAY RECEIVE LONG-DESERVED HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS
World War II veterans may receive
long-deserved high school diplomas Veterans of World War II who
were unable to receive high school diplomas because they served in
the war may now receive a high school diploma from the
high school from which they would have graduated. Senate Bill 387,
signed by Gov. Rick Perry, authorizes Grapevine-Colleyville ISD
and other school districts to issue diplomas to veterans who meet
the following criteria:
- · Honorably discharged
- · Scheduled to graduate after 1940
and before 1951
- · Left high school before graduation
to serve in World War II
Applications for the high school diploma
are available at the Administrative building of
Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, 3051 Ira E. Woods Avenue, Grapevine.
Veterans or a person acting on behalf of a deceased veteran should
complete the form and return it to the district along with one of
the following pieces of documentation:

Walker Field Dedication set for Monday
The Tom Walker Athletic Field at
Grapevine Middle School will be dedicated on Monday, Sept. 24,
4:45 p.m. prior to the GMS 7th grade football game.
The GCISD Board of Trustees voted last
year to name the field after Walker, who is considered a beloved
figure in the history of both Grapevine Middle School and the
community of Grapevine. He joined the GCISD family in 1959 as a
teacher and coach and was the first principal of Grapevine Middle
School. Walker served as first principal of Colleyville Middle
School in 1976, then as head baseball coach at Grapevine High
School. He returned to work with GCISD in 1992 and 1993 to work
with the district’s (then) new program of Energy Management.

Events Which Occurred on September 11?
Sept. 11 was a tragic day
for our nation. GCISD's administration monitored the
situation hour by hour with the news media and local government
officials. The safety of students was always given top
priority. The district's Administrative staff and board
members were on campuses throughout the day to provide assistance
as needed. The district-wide crisis plan was activated
quickly and followed effectively to ensure the safety of our
students. Members of the district's response team ---
district-level psychologists and counselors --- were available to
students and will continue to assist throughout the week as
needed.

Board Forms Revenue
Enhancement Subcommittee
The Carroll ISD School Board is forming a Revenue
Enhancement Committee that will operate as a subcommittee of
the district's Budget & Finance Committee. Interested
individuals should contact Donna Hosea in the
Superintendent's Office at 817-949-8222 by September 10. A
committee interest letter for all standing CISD committees
was recently sent to parents of CISD students. The Revenue
Enhancement subcommittee was not listed among the committee
options, but any CISD resident can apply to participate. The
Revenue Enhancement Committee will research
revenue-generating ideas to help fund CISD programs without
being subject to the Robin Hood school finance system.

Grapevine High School Debate and
Oral Interpretation team experienced several successes when
it competed at the first tournament of the year at Plano
Senior High School on August 24th and 25th. Special
Recognition goes to: 1st place: Duet Acting-CJ Meeks/Trevor
David; 1st place: Dramatic - Kellyn McLean.
CJ Meeks, Trevor David and Kellyn
McLean are Grapevine High School's first Texas Forensic
Association qualifiers for the year and their successes
start the year off right for new GHS coach Ann Accas.
Debate Quarter finalists, earning 2
points for TFA Qualification, were Michael Collins - Lincoln
Douglas Debate;and Alex Kohlmann and Graham Sowa -
Cross-Examination Debate. Winning 8th place in Poetry was
Roderick Hudson, who earned 1 point toward TFA
Qualification.
Semifinalists were: Brian Carey,
Melissa Minshew, Matthew Wiegman, Carly Laywell, Ann Beshai
and Cody Davis.
GrapeDash 5K Cross Country Run and
High School Cross Country Invitational will be held on Sept.
8 at Meadowmere Park, Lake Grapevine. The race starts at 8
a.m. with onsite registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. Cost
for participation in the 5K is $15 per person at the site.
Proceeds are used to support all GHS athletic teams and for

and Marcus Officials Compete in Tug-of-War Before Rivalry
Football Game
Friday,
September 21st, marks the big rivalry game
between the Grapevine Mustangs and the Marcus Marauders.
The community is invited to participate in the
football fun at a Pre-Game Tailgate Party and Tug-of-War
from 5:30 -7:00 p.m. on the Mustang-Panther Stadium Parking
Lot. Join the revelry on the rope with GHS Principal Dana
Drew and MHS Principal Kevin Rogers, along with teachers
from both faculties. The GCISD School Board will be
challenging the Lewisville School Board, as the Marcus and
Grapevine Cheerleaders lead their schools in
friendly spirit cheers.
Chick-Fil-A
of Southlake will supply picnic lunches, while the GHS
Marching Band, Fabulous Fillies, Spirit Rustlers, along with
designated pep leader Dr. Paul Jennings, provide
entertainment. This
rally salutes the freshman, junior varsity and varsity
football players from both schools.

Grapevine Mustangs play the Hays Rebels. Daily ticket sales

special rematch of the teams that competed for the 1996 4A

Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Partners in Excellence advisory
council in August. They are: Chairwoman - Kyra Terral,

Moss, Chase Bank; and Public Relations Officer – Dennis
Carpenter, International Wealth Management.
The goal of the Partners in
Excellence advisory council is to continuously improve the
educational experience for students, while developing
cooperative relationships among the community, businesses,
parents and the district. Area businesses and organizations
are invited to join as partners to work with specific
classrooms, grade-levels or schools.

campus representatives are invited to attend the GCISD
Partners in Excellence Fall Workshop, Thursday, Sept. 20,
7:45 - 9:30 a.m. at Bass Pro Outdoor World, 2501 Bass Pro

partners will work with campus representatives to set goals

Six Grapevine High Student Council
members participated in the Texas Association of Student
Councils Summer Leadership Workshop at San Angelo State
University. Students who attended were Kristian Rushton,
Michele Berry, Lauren Ware, Ashley Swilley, Loren Fowler,
and Lauren Estep.
While at the week-long workshop,
these GHS students worked on leadership skills such as how
to plan projects, how to get others involved and how to
motivate a group and shared ideas with other high school
leaders. Participants were divided into ten groups
made up of students from throughout the state. Attendees
also got a chance to visit with Governor Rick Perry who
stopped by to address the student leaders. Stephanie
Bakintas is the sponsor of the student council.
Grapevine High School Student
Council is celebrating the hard work of principal, Dana
Drew, and assistant principals, Terri Carter, Robert
Rockwell, Todd Rogers and Catherine Henry with Principal
Appreciation Week, Aug. 27th – 31st. Student council
members will make banners for each principal to hang in
his/her office and principals will receive treats during the
week from student council. The culminating event will be a
leadership luncheon hosted by the GHS Leadership Class on
Thursday, Aug. 30th at 12:15 in room 115.
Grapevine High School counselors
are hosting a college information meeting for parents of
senior students on Thursday, Aug. 30th, 7 p.m. in the school
library. The meeting is an opportunity for parents to
receive information about the college admissions process.

Press Release - Board to Set Tax Rate; Provide at Least a 4%
Pay Increase
The GCISD Board of
Trustees has announced its intention to adopt a tax rate
with a 0-cent increase in the Maintenance and Operations
portion to fund the 2001-2002 budget. A 3.45-cent increase
in the debt service tax rate is being recommended on the
Interest and Sinking portion of the rate to service the $134
million bond voters approved in 1998. Click

Releases Impressive District TAAS Scores - District Receives
"Recognized" Rating From State
Fifteen
of 17 GCISD campuses have been designated “Exemplary”
for 2001, the highest rating given by the Texas Education
Agency. Within
the last three years, 100 percent of our schools and
district have earned the highest rating.
In addition, the district received the state’s
rating of “Recognized” based on academics and dropout
rate. Texas districts officially received their
accountability ratings from the TEA today.
The Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS)
report is published in October, and districts receive their
school report cards in November.

Bransford
Elementary Welcomes New Principal
| Sarah
Hodges, who previously worked as assistant principal and
classroom teacher at GCISD from 1985 to 1998, has been named
principal of the Exemplary-rated Bransford Elementary School
in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD.
Hodges served as an office manager of a law firm
since 1998 while working on her doctorate degree.
Previously, Hodges was assistant principal at Silver
Lake Elementary for the1997-98 school year, and before that
served as assistant principal at Grapevine Elementary from
1994 to 1997. Before
that, Hodges was a classroom teacher at Timberline
Elementary from 1985 to 1994.
While there, she held teaching positions in special
education, kindergarten, and fourth grade.

Her
prior experience to joining the GCISD family in 1985
included being a curriculum writer with the Zig Ziglar
Corp., a speech therapist with Royal ISD, and a special
education teacher with Houston ISD.
Hodges is
currently a doctoral candidate at the University of North
Texas. She
holds a master’s degree in Early Childhood from Texas
Woman’s University and a bachelor’s degree in Speech
Pathology & Audiology from Texas Tech University.
She earned her Mid-Management Certification from
Texas Woman’s University.

Journalism
Students from GHS Win Awards at Summer Workshop
Journalism
students from Grapevine High School won eight awards at the
summer publications workshop at Sam Houston State University
in July. More than 600 journalism students from 75 schools
attended and competed for the awards.
Beginning
newspaper students Brianna Carlson, senior, and sophomores
Heather Flinchum and Lauren Ware won the Outstanding
Beginning Staff award. Lauren won the Overall Award for
Newspaper Excellence for her individual accomplishments at
the workshop. Heather and Lauren each were recognized for
their news stories written in workshop classes, and Lauren
received additional awards for headline writing and caption
writing.
The
yearbook staff won the Best Theme and Best Theme Packet
awards for a project completed during the workshop. In
addition, junior yearbook staff member Sritha Reddy won for
best academic spread design and senior Stacey Yee won for
best organizations spread design.

Student, Orijit Ghoshal, Invited to Participate in Greenhill
Lincoln Douglas Debate Round Robin
Grapevine
High’s Orijit Ghoshal has been invited to be 1 of only 16
participants at the exclusive Greenhill Lincoln Douglas
Debate Round Robin on September 24-25 at the Greenhill
School in Dallas. Orijit is a senior at GHS and is in his
fourth year of debate. Participants in the Greenhill Round
Robin are considered the top Lincoln Douglas Debaters from
the entire United States.
Students
from Grapevine High have been invited to participate for 4
of the last 5 years and, according to Jane Boyd, debate
coach, GHS is the school most consistently invited to the
Greenhill Lincoln Douglas Round Robin.

Fabulous Fillies Dance Team from GHS to Host Dance Clinic

Fabulous Fillies dance team from Grapevine High will host a
dance clinic on Sept. 29 at the school for students in
grades K-6. Participants may choose from two sessions, 9
a.m-12 noon and 1-4 p.m. and each will receive a t-shirt and

Celebrates Opening of New Grapevine Middle School
School
administrators, parents and students came together last
night to officially open the new Grapevine Middle School
campus.
The facility, located at 301 Pony Parkway in north
Grapevine, replaces the former school that had been in use
as a high school or middle school since 1952.
The old building on Worth Street in Grapevine
originally served as the Grapevine High School. It became
the Grapevine Junior High and later Grapevine Middle School
when the new facility on Mustang Drive was built in 1969.
The old GMS facility has been leased and is being
operated by Faith Christian School, formerly located in
Colleyville.

Changes Menus to Help Students Create Better Nutritional
Habits
Fresh fruit every day, healthier
drinks, and smaller servings of desserts and snacks are just
some of the menu changes GCISD elementary students may
notice as they head to the cafeteria this year. The district’s
Nutritional Services staff has revised the lunch and snack
selections to make it easier for students to choose
healthier foods. Additionally, the staff will be providing
more information to students about the nutritional values of
foods and the benefits of eating healthy.

Sonic Drive-In carhops will be
wearing different uniforms on Aug. 11 when
the Colleyville Heritage High School cheerleaders take on
the job, working
for tips to raise money for their participation in local and
national competitions.
CHHS boasts three cheerleading
squads - varsity, junior varsity and
freshman - who promote school spirit by cheering at school
athletic events
throughout the year. The varsity squad has been featured in
American
Cheerleader Magazine and consistently has placed in the top
10 at national

"Howdy
Week" at Grapevine High School
Grapevine High School Student
Council has planned a week’s worth of activities during
Howdy Week, the first full week of school, to welcome all
students back for the 2001-02 school year. Activities
include dress-up days, lunchtime activities and special
events for the entire student body.
Monday, Aug. 20 –
Students are asked to wear a Hawaiian shirt to pay homage to
the end of summer break. The first student council meeting
will take place 5:30-6 p.m. the lecture hall. All students
are invited to attend to get information on joining the
student council.
Tuesday, Aug. 21 –
“Kiss a Fish” day. During all lunches, student council
members will be handing out Hershey Kisses to freshmen.
Wednesday, Aug. 22
– Students are to wear their class colors. Freshmen will
wear the shirt they received at Fish Camp, sophomores are to
wear white, juniors wear blue and seniors wear red.
Thursday, Aug. 23 –
Wear a shirt that shows where you went on summer vacation.
During lunches, student council members will run the
traditional Mr. and Miss Mello contest, a timed contest
selecting a guy and girl who can eat the most marshmallows.
Friday, Aug. 24 –
Overall Mustang Spirit Day. Students are encouraged to wear
overalls and GHS attire.

Middle
School Students within District May Request Transfer to New
GMS
A new state-of-the-art Grapevine
Middle School opens with the 2001-02 school year and the
much-larger building offers the opportunity for students
from other middle schools within GCISD to apply to attend
this new school. Under GCISD Board Policy FDB (Local),
Requests for Student Transfers are allowed under certain
criteria. “Available capacity at the requested campus”
is one such Board-approved criterion.
Parents who wish to apply for this
provision in policy and have their child(ren) attend the
newly opening campus of Grapevine Middle school may request
a transfer to that site. Transfers may be granted with a
one-year stipulation on continued space availability, and
parents must provide transportation to the requested site.

campus and on the district’s web site. They may also
be requested from the District’s Division of Human

Offers Free and Reduced-Priced School Meals
Children in the
Grapevine-Colleyville ISD who qualify under the United
States Department of Agriculture guidelines may get school
meals free or
for the reduced price of 40 cents for lunch and 30 cents for
breakfast. A
child from a family that receives food stamps or help from
Temporary
Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) can receive free school
meals and,
depending upon the parents’ income, a child may also be
eligible for free
or reduced-priced meals.
All meals served must meet
nutritional standards established by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture. If a child has a disability, as
determined by a
doctor and the disability prevents the child from eating the
regular
school meal, the school will make substitutions prescribed
by the doctor. If a substitution is needed, there is no extra charge for
the meal;
however, the school is not required to make a substitution
for a food
allergy unless it meets the definition of disability.
To receive free or reduced-priced
school meals, an Application for Free
and Reduced-Priced Meals form must be completed and returned
to the school the child attends. Forms are available by
calling the Nutrition Services

CHHS
Cheerleaders Present Their Annual Cheerfest
An afternoon of fun is planned for
Sat., Aug. 25, 1 to 4 p.m. when
Colleyville Heritage High School cheerleaders present their
annual Cheerfest, the only cheer clinic sponsored by the nationally
ranked CHHS cheerleaders.
Registration is underway now for
the clinic which will be held at CHHS. The school's cheerleaders will teach young students the
basics of
cheerleading techniques, jumps and dance. Clinic
participants then will get to perform their routines at the Sept. 7 CHHS football
game, the first
home game of the season.
In addition to learning skills,
attendees will be treated to refreshments. All early registrants will receive an
specially-designed
T-shirt that day
which can be worn for the football performance.
Price for early registration is
just $25. Registration forms are available

Cheerfest is a major
fund-raiser for the award-winning CHHS cheerleaders. Besides
supporting
the school's sporting events, the varsity, junior varsity
and freshman
