Unity Oak Tree dedication rescheduled

In remembrance of the lives lost and families impacted in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and in support of the heroes that worked tirelessly in their behalf, the Southlake City Council will ceremonially plant and dedicate the Unity Oak Tree in Family Park (Southlake Town Square) at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18. Texas Recycles Day events planned

The City of Southlake and Keep Southlake Beautiful will hold a series of Texas Recycles Day events from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at The Home Depot, 300 Village Center Drive. Activities will include:

  • Cycling for Recycling. Bring your bike and five plastic recyclable bottles and learn about both bike safety and plastic recycling through a series of interactive stations. All participants will receive a completion certificate. Relay races for all ages will be held at 11:30, noon and 12:30.
  • Donating for Recycling. Volunteers will accept donations of used clothes, furniture, books, toys and other household items to benefit GRACE, Goodwill, Union Gospel Mission and Battered Women's Foundation.
  • Recycling and Energy Classes. Home Depot employees will hold classes throughout the event on such topics as organic gardening, home improvements and repairs, energy efficiency and composting.

Holiday Celebration, tree lighting, set for Nov. 17

The City of Southlake's official Christmas tree will be lit as the holiday season is kicked off from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in Southlake Town Square. The annual event, "Holiday Celebration," will include strolling entertainers and carolers plus a visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Visitors will be treated to free carriage rides, plus free train rides for children. Donations also will be accepted for a Christmas toy drive. Tarrant County holiday event comes to Town Hall

The Tarrant County Extension office will hold a holiday entertaining and gift giving event at Southlake Town Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m on Friday, Nov. 30. Cost is $15 per person in advance or $20 at the door, and space is limited. For information, call the Tarrant County Extension office at (817) 884-1294.

City offices to close for Thanksgiving

Most city offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Public safety and other essential functions will remain open. Garbage collection on Friday will not be affected.
